So I finally got my 6 banger reinstalled with a good working 3 speed that was gifted to me. Now my column shift isn't moving Like it's jamed in one position or possibly between positions). It's not the trans, it is definitely in the shifter mechanism. I was going to take it apart and check it out but can't get it apart. So the shop manual shows a pin that goes through the mechanism and the shifter shaft that I presume holds it all together. But I can't locate the pin! It looks like it should go through the sleeve that sits between the upper and lower shift arms. I have cleaned it good and just can't find it! Has anyone had any experience with one of these? Really frustrated at this point.
did you try and putting some oil and let it soak, could just be rusted together or old lube turned to rock
These 3 speed manual shifters are becoming rare as hens teeth, the ones that sold for $39.95 at Autozone and Pep Boys five years ago made by Spectre vanished from the market suddenly about the same time. I used several of these "back in the day" they are universal fit read the lower notes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/166856973274?
put liberal amounts of WD-40in it. Will try it again tomorrow to see if it helps. Car has sat for a long time so it may just be rusted up. Fingers crossed.
That was not my plan. I just wanted to get the column shifter working. I hate to put anymore time and money into the old I6/3 speed set up since my eventual plan is to go with a 302 and AOD eventually. Just wanted to get it running and movable at this point.
PB Blaster, Kroil, or a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone would be a better choice than WD 40 to free up the shifter.
Thanks for all the advice fellas! The PB blaster seems to have done the trick. I have it shifting through all the gears now; though not as smoothly as I had hoped. Hoping it will continue to loosen up as I go. The good news is the Free transmission that my neighbor gave me seems to be working well!
