I've seen them listed as J Nuts & U Nuts as well. Around here they sell them in the help section at the parts store.
Probably the grille casting has studs threaded into it, & nuts with washers hold it in. That's assuming the grille is cast, of course. Buick grilles were usually cast in that period.
^^^^ what he said is correct. The grille is a cast unit with a right and left side. Uses threaded studs, washers and nuts to attach. Use either lock washers or Nylock nuts to keep them from coming loose. Mega bucks to get one chromed. Easier to install with two people. Lightly snug the one at the two o'clock position (driver's side) or ten o'clock (passenger side) first to align the halves. Most likely you have some studs broken off flush with the hole in the grille back which will have to be removed. Do not use stainless steel studs.
all the studs in the 2 halves are gone I tapped the holes out just trying to figure out what held them in I guessing just use washers??
Fender washers work best as the holes in the fenders are oversize to allow for adjustment. Nylok nuts give a cleaner look than lock washers. I will PM you.
