Projects 32 5W Build - The $4K Swapmeet Body

I started cleaning up Lincoln brake drums. I discovered the 39/40 Lincoln front drums were way over sized, so I ordered a pair of Boling Bros drums but needed the Lincoln hubs. Using a 5/8 holesaw to cut the swedge and the hydraulic press, the studs were out in no time and hubs and drums seperated.


I cleaned up the faces in the lathe

Now waiting on new studs and drums


The rears were still in spec, so was able to turn them at .060 over. I cleaned up the outside for more purple paint and painted the insides with cast iron paint.

 

Continued cleaning on the front fenders and started stripping the hood tops as well

I remember the post about straightening some 32 front fenders on the lawn with a big hunk of wood for a mallet. You’ve sure come a long way, baby!

More progress assembling chassis parts and prepping more sheetmetal. 57 days until we leave for Oklahoma.

What? No chrome brake drums?

 

I know, I know.

I am at the love/hate stage with chrome parts right now. I just spent hours cleaning copper and rust out of the inside of the torque tube and didn't feel like I had it in me to deal with the same on drums and hubs right now. They may get plated when the car comes apart for paint, but I thought they would look good in lavender (like the engine) against the chrome backing plates...plus paint fits in the budget and limited time frame better right now!

 

Chrome or paint, it's all in the complementary details!

 

Neil, does your old chrome stand out against the new chrome? How does it compare?

 

I am happy with the way it all looks together. For instance, here is a mix of new and old on the front end.

The spindles, shackles, tierod and draglink are new chrome.

The axle, wishbone, perches, spring, backing plates and pitman arm are all old chrome

 

More new chrome to mix in with my old chrome...

 

Is that even a question?

Josh @carrillocustoms is working on a screw in steel insert, to keep the Oklahoma weather out in October. It will eventually be covered in off-white upholstery.

I like the wooden floor to absorb the pounding he’s taking! Amazing how wood will make a brutal job bearable!

 

A shop I’ve been at also had a wooden platform to stand on for the power hammer. I thought it was because guys are shorter nowadays.
