Looks like a Corvair box. Use to be the go to for T buckets.

Looks like your box has play and is leaking because the large, stamped steel lock nut has loosened.

Back off that nut some more and tighten that big aluminum plug in the end of the box. You want some preload on the bearings but not so they are binding, and there’s probably a factory spec’ for the worm gear preload when the box is being assembled but I don’t know it. When the large plug is adjusted tighten the big nut and take it for a drive to see if you still have play in it.

There are two adjustments on the steering box. One for the preload on the worm gear (input) shaft and one for the sector shaft at center of travel. It's best done out of the car if you have the inch-pound torque wrench to do it correctly. You can get it close in the car if you are careful. Get the front end jacked and blocked up so no weight on the front end. Take the draglink off the pitman arm.
    1. Loosen the big steel lock ring on the aluminum end cap. To tighten screw the cap clockwise while also twisting the input shaft so you can get a feel of how snug it is. It's basically taking out any endplay plus 5 or 6 inch-pounds, so not much. And double check after tightening the lock nut.
    2. Loosen the lock nut on the sector set screw. For this adjustment you need to center the box. Check total turns lock to lock and then position it half way between. So if you get 5 1/2 turns lock to lock you would center the box at 2 3/4. In this position back the screw slightly and then turn in the adjustment screw until it is just snug. At this point the sector is just touching the worm. There is supposed to be a slight preload when the box is centered to prevent wandering, but no binding. Turn the box slightly off the centered position and screw the adjustment screw in about 1/8 of a turn. Then turn the box through the centered position back and forth a few times. You do not want any bind, but you should feel a very slight firmness as it passes through center. Adjust as necessary. On the bench the preload would be somewhere between 20 and 25 inch-pounds. If you have a friend that might be familiar with steering box adjustments you might ask for some assistance.

Thanks to all. It is a non reversed chromed Corvair box and parts on order. Now just need to figure out a way to get turn signals for the steering column which appears to be older Corvair

Good info from everybody. If you want to stop the leak......drain the gear lube out of the box and replace with John Deere Cornhead Grease......it will work wonders.

Yes, the John Deere grease is great. But if you don't live near a farm store it is just a semi-fluid EP (extream pressure) 00 grease. Look for EP NLGI 00 on the label. Many brands out there.

To prevent any chance of leakage of my F1 box-converted-to-cowl-steer I added a Zerk fitting to the fill plug and pump grease into the box to mix with the gear oil.
