Having never run a spool, can the gear set used on it be used in another 9in carrier?

OP would have to either set it up, or have someone do it.

I would think you could swap out the spool for a clutch type locker, pinion depth shouldn't be effected. Set the preload on the side bearings, and set backlash.

Well thanks for all the over sensitive replies, musta been nice being born everything. An open carrier rear end applies torque to the wheel with the least traction. Having never had a ford 9” opened up i wasnt sure if there was a center axle bearing or just carrier bearings. This is the underside of my once toque tube suspensioned 55 buick. Bet not all of you coulda pulled this off and dont see me rubbing it in your faces. Clearly I woulda done my research before cutting the splined end off, obviously a bad idea haha. ✌️

Well, you did your research here, I understand your “mood”, but there were also several correct replies of what you need to do.
    So “lighten up Francis” ;)

I aint got a dog in this race, but truck arms are cool. Hot Rods to Hell has a high horsepower tri 5 setup that I'm really thinking about. Detroit Locker for me.
    Feelings. Woah woah woah woah.

  8. I have yet to see a semi floating drive axle with a center bearing. Just a learning moment

I’ve never seen a center bearing in and axle before. Maybe some manufacturer did, but nothing I’ve seen.

Not done, because it is absolutely not necessary. The shaft is supported on the splines. Adding an unnecessary bearing drives up the cost, with zero benefit.

Sometimes the brutal truth is better than padded lies.

But credit where it is due...... You did ask before jumping in from the deep end.

If you cant find an open diff head, consider a replacement carrier [they are simple to install, and you don't disturb the pinion depth]
On a Street car a Torsen style is carrier great. But if you like doing burnouts, then consider a Detroit Locker [noisy]

You can also leave the spool in if you don't drive at slow speeds. But you will need a stiff rear anti-roll bar AND/OR 2 way adjustable rear shocks [with maximum stiffness on rebound]
This ^^^ unloads the inside tyre during cornering [but it's still a pig for carpark show car queens]

I kinda miss the old days when the really fast street racers pulled into the parking lot late at night with the ass end jerking and the tires chirping....

No real reason to get your feelings hurt, you asked a question and got some honest answers.
I think every real lesson I ever learned cost me money or pain and sometimes both.
we just tried to help you save some of that, Good Luck

Back when I was working I had to attend some BS seminars on how to be an effective leader/manager. Of course I was neither but two of the principles from those sessions seem to apply to this discussion, IMO. First, a good manager surrounds himself with people who are smarter than he is. And second, he wants people to tell him what he needs to know, not what he wants to hear. Just saying.

All bullshit and hurt feelings aside, it comes down to a few things, Do you like the gear ratio that is in the rear end now (yes) (no) Yes, you could find a carrier either open or limited slip and swap it for the spool. NO, figure out what ratio you would like to have and what spline count you need to match the axle splines and find a complete third member that fits those things that is in good shape.

Swapping out the third member isn't a big project as long as you are strong enough to lift the old one out and the new one in. Right now I could not lay under a car and swap them out as I don't have full strength back in both arms after I bunged myself up last December. Before he got his overdrive unit in his Chevy II Squirrel swapped 9 inch third members in the pits during drag week for drag gears and then road gears.
