Technical Custom cut glass, what should I expect for quality?

I ordered some one piece side windows for my '56 F100 from a rather large online custom glass company. Each piece is cut, I assume by hand. When I received the cuts, the edges are bumpy and not flat.

All edges are wavy, the bottom, and two sides will hide, but I'd think at least the top should be smooth.

Is this typical for custom cut glass? Do I just accept it? I am just not sure what to expect and don't want to be over anal about it if that is the best that can be done.

I would expect the same edge every door glass has, smooth and evenly finished with no defects. I don't get how someone would even send that out as a finished product.

Were the patterns you made smooth and consistent? If not, there's your first mistake.

I have had glass cut for 4 different cars and that does not seem kosher to me. It has all been flat glass, cut by home garage guys and glass companies, but all had smooth straight edges. Yes I would have concerns. Good luck, Dan

I didn't send them patterns, I just selected the vehicle on the website.

I would expect much better quality than what you received unless It was from the lowest cost provider possibly. Whatever the case, I would want nicer edges on the glass whether I cut it myself or paid to get it.

Not acceptable........ and by the way, I am a glazier. That is a very poor result.

I would hope it was cheap with that kind of response. Amazing the lack of quality that people think they can actually sell today.

That is true, but it will be time consuming.
Are they going to pay you for your time to correct their less than ideal work?
    Is it tempered glass?

Where are you in WV? I just googled glass companies in Huntington and there are at least 10 and it looks like most of them do auto glass. When I needed flat glass for my '46 Mercury, I looked up glass suppliers in Chattanooga and there were several who would make them a heck of a lot cheaper than buying them online. The ones I got had clean, finished edges. That piece of yours with the wavy edge looks like early morning Monday or late Friday work.

  17. I supplied a local glass company (one that does not specialize in automotive glass) with two panes of cracked auto glass (one door window, one half of a split front window) that I wanted to them copy. The glass I got back had very poor edges, clearly they didn't sand/finish the edges. I ended up sanding them myself (by hand) and had no issues. That being said, from a company that supplies replacement glass specifically for autos, I would fully expect the glass to be "installation ready". But, after bringing this to their attention and hearing their response, I don't think you have any other option that to sand it yourself.

I would recommend checking how accurate they are before relying on them as a template.
The quality of the pieces supplied does not inspire confidence........

Sure he has another option. Cancel the credit card payment. I’m sure Mastercard can see how crappy the job was with those pics.

The entire kit was over $545.00 Inluded 2 channel strips (have to bend myself), the felt wipers (generic I have to cut myself) and the smoked TEMPERED glass.

I'd be shocked, most order and install..........nothing custom. If it is custom it is all laminate and not tempered.

Be very careful sanding the edge of tempered glass. Easy to lose the whole shebang..........
Shaping and edgework are done prior to the tempering process.

  24. I don't know where you are in West Virginia and I do not know who you got your glass from but that is second rate work at best. I have had all my glasswork done locally and I have always been very happy with their work. Plus if I have a problem I have someone local to go to.

I haven't named them yet, wanted to see how they handled it before I bashed them openly. They are a pretty well known/large supplier though. They pop up on quite a few forums.

I can't get good work on glass cutting locally any more....it's overpriced, and takes forever, and doesn't quite match the template I give them, and the edges aren't finished like they should be.

so unfortunately it might be "as good as it gets", but seems to me if you had asked here about where to get glass before you ordered it, you might have got some advice pointing you to a better place?

    good luck...
