I would defer to @jnaki, who is the resident Lions expert. Your picture is from OCIR.

    Hello,

Thanks for the note. But, the timeline in the photo is beyond my era at Lion's Dragstrip. It looks to be pretty close to closing in 72. (Camaros and Dodge sedans in the staging lanes.) By 1970, match races if any were non funny car or fuel dragsters. No special classes like the old gas classes, street roadsters, modified roadsters or altered class racecars, if they were there, it was a specialty race day only, not weekly. Gone were the days of fun and now, it you did not have a sponsor buying all of your parts, you sat in the stands. Or, no longer went to the drags.

If there were old style Gas Coupes, it was a special match race days... It is too bad that Don Montgomery is not around any more. He probably would have known about the racer in question. He was still participating in the exhibition class race program if it was a specialty day at the drags.

But, the key element here is that despite the altered coupes and sedans shown, most are beyond the HAMB timeline designation of 1965 or earlier. Those fuel altereds as nice as the smoky photos show, are in the late 60s and into the 70s. (beyond HAMB rules) But, they, too were for show only and not a round robin class formed, elimination run era like we all knew in the late 50s-early 60s.

upload_2024-8-22_16-35-10.png OCIR was open in 1967 and until Lion’s Dragstrip closed in 72, was suffering from cost and low attendance. But, they lasted until 1983, and then, it all came crashing down...YRMV

Remember, in the late 66-through 72, Lion's Dragstrip and other local dragstrips were now catering to funny cars, fuel dragsters as their main source of entertainment. Yes, factory stock cars were also there, but fading fast. Soon, it was a 64 car field of funny cars + fuel dragsters and nothing else. And after closing, the show moved 33 miles East into the big OC.

Yes, before someone starts telling all of us that John Force started in the early days... yes he did. And as the years progressed and he became popular, his empire grew. He is now pushing the end of his age bracket, is in the retirement stage, millions of dollars later.

    Note:

There is little to no information for drag racers other than funny cars or fuel dragsters after the post 69-70 era as competitive classes. Written reports were all top fuel eliminator rounds and funny car eliminations. if there was a match race or two, there were ads in the Drag News until they, too, ceased to exist. So, for HAMB rules and stories, it should be for those good old days and not in the wrong time period.

Who knows how many times this photo has been posted, but it is the most notable picture of the AA/FA class in history.
