I am enjoying your build! I just started a '40 Chrysler Deluxe coupe. Installed a '54 331 hemi, 200R4 tranny. Chassis is pretty well along, haven't started any sheet metal work. Question; I would like to have some sort of rubber covered running boards. Painted are hi-maintenance. Steele nor Metro make repro covers. Does anyone have a solution for this? One thought is to body work the sides of the boards and put flat rubber covers on top only.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/plydo-parts-yes.1289293/ This was the place that had running boards for my Ply that I never got around to buying. Have no idea if they did Chryslers or have any left. Considering the originals were vulcanized around the steel, I don't know if a suitable replacement is possible without molds and a full-on manufacturing facility. Even a 2-part modern material would require a mold for each side, with all the detail.
Covers made for the app glue on very nicely with contact cement. I put a set on a '36 Pontiac from Steele several years ago and it was perfect. Key is they are formed to fit exactly.
Glad you are enjoying the build, even though it has dragged out a while. It's funny you are running a 331 as I have a 341 Desoto Hemi I purchased for this car but decided given how far along the previous owner got with the fabrication in the engine bay that I would stick with the 318 Poly. Maybe second time around when we paint the exterior I will do that swap Good luck with your build @willys36
Took the car for a quick run down the road, the front suspension has settled and dropped a lot, current stance needs to be swapped Will change front springs and lower the back a bit more. Lots of other fiddly jobs to sort to but some progress all the same.
Got the back end sitting an inch lower, will have to change the front springs to lift the nose a touch for better steering geometry.
We are getting closer now, the interior is now in, now for all of the other finishing off jobs like fitting glass, tuning the carbs and getting it ready for its final engineering certification.
Glass is in and the list of jobs to do is getting a lot shorter now. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be ready for final engineering sign off.
luv it ! really nice interior. The buttons on the right; torqueflite ? You've tucked in both bumpers...about how much? My front bumper was moved back about 3 or 4" , but could go another 1" or 1 1/2"
Well spotted, the car is running a 727 Torqueflite, the buttons are from an Australian Valiant AP5. The bumpers have been tucked in, when I got the car the front was already done and I was happy, the rear I have gone another inch closer than the previous owner had done, so sorry I can't say how much was taken out prior to me getting the car.
34Airflow.......just went thru the thread again & reminded me how much I have enjoyed this build both before your purchase & since.....I have a question tho'........have you had to do anything to the triple carb setup?, I've a P600 Edelbrock intake & a set of new Strombergs and was wondering if you have changed jets, also have you a pic showing the fuel lines to & from the fuel bolt & where did the fittings come from as here in country NSW there are no local yokels who have any idea nor stock what I want.......and the interior looks perfect....whoever did a great job...........andyd
Hey Andy, It's timely you ask about the Triples, they are proving a problem and just today I've taken them off and given them to a guy in town who trades as Allcarb (also where I got them from) to try and make work better. I will keep you posted on what we work out as at the moment they are flooding at idle but just right in the higher end. The fittings and line came from All Carb too. The interior is the work of Dantrim in Bendigo, Adrian and I worked on a few of the ideas I had combined with some of his input to get the result. The steering wheel was done by Steerwheel Kris. I'll keep you updated with those carbies! Trav
Hey Andy, I've finally gotten some closer images of the carb setup. This is a custom so under the bonnet isn't pretty! We have spent many hours trying to get everything working properly and it's not quite 100% yet with one carb not playing nicely still. today's job is to swap it out for another new one to see if it is in fact a dud carb.
Pretty nice for under the hood ugly! I will mention that the throttle (kickdown?) cable angle is going to saw through the housing and nut. The one connected to the top of the drilled arm. I've got a similar setup and it's got a little slice due to angles. If you can bend it so the cable exits right though to center, it will be smoother and last longer.
Fantastic build so far. Few questions if you have time. Who rebuilt your beautiful gauge cluster? What size and brand wheel and tire? Are those Chrysler hub caps?
Amazing build! The amount of detail shows for sure! I love how you are using a less popular engine to power the car. The Poly is a good engine and you dont see many of them. It's nice to see someone building a chrysler product car as opposed to the more common Ford. Heck parts for these in the states are hard to find and I can only imagine how hard it is to find parts over there. Loving your new car as well!
