Thanks for noticing. They are peaked form the factory but a lot of body guys primer and block the peak away. I taped the peak on one side, block sanded up to the tape, removed it and taped the other side of the peak and repeated the process. Then give the peak a little knock down so it isn't too sharp. I do the same on 69 Camaros to keep those fender lines crisp and not rounded.

  2. I used that same trick on mid-year vettes as well since it is even easier to take the peak off on fiberglass. Nice crisp lines make such a difference.

Great point! I have painted vettes and I seen a lot of them at shows where the body guys have essentially ruined the cars by sanding through the profiles on those C3 fenders.

As I was looking at all the paint work that was done in this thread, I could see all these flaws and I wondered to myself if anyone else noticed. Then I realized that I needed to clean my monitor screen.

Couple of bugs and dust but it's single stage and will buff out. IMG_20240816_104208441.jpg IMG_20240816_104133588_HDR.jpg IMG_20240808_192408951.jpg

Well, they don't always work out. I did this one last year. Mixed a bunch of old lacquer together (brown), taped off the scallops, then painted the really cheap eBay "Hot Rod" satin black enamel over it. Should have worked, but the black was coming off in sheets. Took most of it off with a razor blade. Take 2. Found some nice-looking Dark Saddle acrylic enamel on the bottom shelf in my shop. Says it was mixed in 1985 on the label. That'll work. Looks better brown anyway. He wanted the scallops back on, but I need to work on my stuff.

Rattle can (12) in the garage, scuff off the shine, and just drive it

  16. I'm doing the rattle can in the garage route, too. I'm 75, running out of time, money and stamina so it's getting Rustoleum hunter green. Damn Rustoleum is reacting with the primer so I've had to wet-sand off a lot of places and respray, then wait until it dries and wet-sand and respray again until I at least get a uniform finish. Pisses me off to no end but can't start assembling and wiring until the paint is done. Will it win "Best Paint" awards? Only in my garage, when compared to leaving it in primer and not getting it on the road. From 10 feet away, after a light cut and buff, it will look like an expensive, professional job. Good enough.

  18. Great results, Swade! I'm heartily encouraged, enough that I'll just keep plugging away and trying to match the quality your efforts produced.

Funny that I just found this thread. Used a portable car port from HF as a paint booth. This front cap will be a pain. Many compound curves back to back.

I love the fact that you get to use natural light which is so important to me. Nothing is as good as natural lighting. Todays work. Down to the front cap. Then the main body.

It wasn't shiny paint but every year when my truck was in primer I'd scuff it down and run over to my buddy's house and spray a fresh coat of primer on it the day before or even the morning of the Vintiques of Yakima show the first weekend of August. There is an aerial photo from an outfit that would fly over farms and farm houses and take photo in hope of selling the photo the home owner that shows me spraying purple primer on my 48 in their driveway.

The best done in the driveway paint that I ever saw was a black lacquer paint job on a late 40's Buick sedan that two kids did in a driveway in Waco, Tx in the 70's with Laddie Segrest supervising them. That car turned out seriously nice.

It's ready for storage now too, just need the carbs tuned, window stuff, a pair of front rims and door panels painted to be pretty much done.
