There's got to be a couple of leftover airplane parts used to build those things..

 

Alien invasion vehicles.

 

Those poor trucks. Can you imagine giving your kid some Buddy L trucks that looked like that to play with? The nightmares it would cause!

 

Grinning to myself here, if a kid today was remotely interested in those trucks say as the size and style of vintage Tonka and Buddy L and Nylint trucks, those would deserve to be beaten with a hammer and destroyed, or abused with M-80's and fire crackers!
Been there did that as a kid, that didn't know any better !

I believe at least one of the movie cars was Corvair powered.

Those are regular European trucks (most likely Mercedes Benz or MAN) with a cab designed by Luigi Colani, who is to vehicles what Salvador Dali was to painting. There was a small run of them, mostly bought as show attractions and such, I actually saw them real close (they're no better in the flesh). His early sports cars designs were half ok, but as time moved on things got weirder and weirder.

LOL The first thing that came to mind was underneath all that was a Rochester two-barrel starving for air. I remember seeing a number of cars back in the 80s at the street machine nationals that had all kinds of what looked like wild induction systems only to realize there was a 750 Holly hidden underneath. Made you look though.

Someone left the funky 14'' Cutlass wheels right on that Olds frame to help with the overall ''look''.
