that's one axle, not two...and the Fords used coil springs...

beats me, that's a neat mystery!

Control arms looked familiar to me as well but I can’t find them quite like this, car is 2 door sedan round back with paired rear window and suicide doors. Has a 3 line belt line reveal, swept front fenders

Leading arms, with semi elliptic springs.
Never seen that combo. Gotta be prewar.

New style drum brakes. Newer than 1955 my guess.

there were a few cars using "Bendix" brakes in the late 30s. I think the oldest I worked on was the 40 La Salle. But cars with brakes that good usually had independent suspension. The tube shocks are kind of modern, too.

    We'll figure it out eventually.

pictures of exterior parts of the car can also help ID it

Will have to go back and get better pics of the carcass, posted this in sitting and rotting a while back, seem to have deleated them from my phone. I just assumed this was an early ford, didn’t really look too close as it’s on its roof, wadded up and pretty well rotted. Only reason for my renewed interest is the Nash I recently acquired has no suspension.

The added complexity of the leading arms, suggests that this wasn't a low end vehicle.

Very interesting. That axle appears to be able to twist in the spring mounts. An i-beam front axle with split wishbones! From the factory! Now that's an idea ahead of the times...

The line drawing @Mr48chev posted sure has a different axle notably the center part, but sure backs up @Oneball .

You know, with the split bones I wonder if the springs have shackles on both ends so they won't bind up the suspension.

Any plans to use it for your Nash project? Definitely a unique setup, looks like it has some interesting potential.

  22. I’d drag it home just because it’s cool! But I have a problem.

  23. Yes, both ends of the springs are shackled. The radius rods(arms) hold the axle in place and everything else floats. Must have rode pretty good!
Hudson used variations of this setup for several years in the 30's. I have a '35 Hudson axle(very similar) under my '34 Plymouth

Going to give it a good try for sure, spent a couple hours soaking things down and loosened up any nuts that would move
