home made tools and equipment...

  1. Is this IT tech board now???

  2. Naw, just a normal HAMB thread; skews left and right with comments on some one else's comment on an issue, then back on course.

...so to get this thing back on track here's a specialized saw I made several years ago. A big nail (bent as necessary) and a saber saw blade welded together. I don't even remember now what I made if for but it worked and here it is:

(if I showed this thing already please just ignore this time)

b-t-w; the "5" marked on the bench is 5' from the left end of the bench. I marked it every 6" with a Sharpie ages ago. It's plenty good enough for rough measurements/guesstimates.

  4. @atch further to your adap ted tool idea. Made the drill bit 40 years ago, when it was easier and cheaper to build than buy, especially on weekends. Welded a bolt to end of 5//16 drill bit, to extend it. Friend had installed new engine in his 55, then found that it wasn't drilled and threaded for staggered pattern starter. Put the proper starter in place with the outside bolt, then used the starter housing as a jig to drill the block for 3/8-16 thread.
The other tool shown was a washer cut on one end for nut. Needed it to hold the nut in behind a drip rail, so that I could tighten the bolts holding the homemade trunk hinges on my A roadster.
    just kept them around, because.

Fixture to make a bend in steel rod. Most of you have or have made something similar. A couple of 1/2" bolts welded together and the welds ground down so it fits in the vise without wobbling.

A pair of fixtures for beating out new ram tubes last year. 20230926_222059.jpg 20230926_222126.jpg
The mostly finished tubes. The 1st was to form the bells, and the 2nd was to form the bottom flat flanges.

I’ve seen those type of “rotisseries” before and they seem to do the trick!

A welding table we have at work. Was fabbed up the blanchard ground flat. Risers are 1x3 CRS and tops are 1/2x3 CRS. We had to do some mods and had it reground. At the same time had the risers ground flat. Risers have a 1/2 bolt clamping ends and can be slid into any position for fabbing. IMG_3530.jpeg IMG_3529.jpeg

I built this tool to help me bend radius on sheet metal. I saw photos of something like this, so I made one. I have no idea what they are called. 3 different sizes of pipe and some left over scrap from a treadmill. I like to make things from junk.

Ooh, I like that! And easy to duplicate. I have a hood and belly pan to make. That'll be just the inexpensive ticket.

I made one as well. It's called a pipe anvil, which I believe Gene Winfield originally came up with.

Gene calls them a Windfield bender.

I haven't made one yet but they can be handy for sheet metal fab.

I watched the video and it looks like I over built again. At least I know it's called a pipe anvil. Mine is 6' long and it is a lot taller than the ones in the photos. I do not like to bend over. Most of my work benches are higher than average. I am working on a way to measure where the bends will be in relation to where I place the metal in the tool. I will be making a one piece tapered hood top.

The "SECRETs" to finding things in your shop.............

Plan "A" Tell your wife you can't find something !

Plan "B" Buy lots of everything instead of just one or a few ! (permanent markers, eye glasses, tape measures)
If they are laying all over the shop it increases your odds of finding one.

    Plan "C" Do both "A" and "B"................:D

If you still can't find one, that is a signal; that you don't have enough of them on hand yet.......buy more!

I've got about 10 tape measures, 8 pairs of glasses, and I buy permanent markers off Amazon by the box (much cheaper). Its better than wasting my time hunting for them.

Needed special frame brackets for my gas and brake lines. No one made them in the size I needed or in the length.

So I built a jig to do it myself, I can make one in about 3 minutes....

As I've stated before, I've about custom built everything on this car !!!

Great idea! So the part being held by your vice grips is what you hammer on to bend the metal strip, correct?

Yes sir you are correct! The one leg that goes to the center is rounded on the end on both sides to create that nice bow between the 2 lines. The other leg is just rounded on 1 side, the side that goes next to the brake line, the other side of that leg just has the corner knocked off as to not create a sharp edge/mark against the clamp itself...

That weld looks about perfect, so I gotta ask the question. How many beers were finished before the glue gun job?
