Well I'm just south from both along the way back and take all the pics of my suburban you want.
Also, one you don't know about and would give me a bunch of shit when you do.
We can chat about being a Dad and the next step in life when they leave for college.

So, exactly what are the dates?
I’m in Mesa AZ, east side of Phoenix. Several Hotrod gatherings in September but most are early Cars N Coffees. The Zip Tie drags are at the end of September.

    Hello,

Well said… Our family history goes back to Norman, OK and the University of Oklahoma. My wife’s mom was involved in the university homecoming event. Her dad taught classes there for a while during those late 30s-early 40s.

A University of Oklahoma Homecoming event for our Great Grandmother (wife's mom) back in the 1939-40. It was a surprise, but she told us of the event and she remembers the university well.

Then jump up to our own college years and my wife told me that she had her eyes set in 1956 to go to high school in OKC and then the University of Oklahoma. She also mentioned that if she had done that route, instead of moving to Buena Park in So Cal, she would have had a strong accent from so much time in OKC schools. But, even back then, the big university was well known for happy times in that era.

It was not to be as we met in college in So Cal and by then, she had the influence of living and playing at local So Cal schools. It was an episode in our lives we will not forget… party school for us? There were large gatherings in the Belmont Shore community nearby, as that was the college age folks area, packed into small homes or apartments. But, we liked the area, so she had a small apartment steps away from the bay and ocean. Solitude and privacy… YRMV

Here is a great story about homecoming at the University of Oklahoma in 1939-40. And our own experiences at the local So Cal college, Long Beach state college. My wife and I chuckle at the idea and at the time, of her mom and I sitting together in a classroom + studying for papers and tests together. What a memory that will be forever be ingrained into our family history.

    Note:
Great Grandma was the absolute best person I have met in a long time. She was very kind, gentle, small stature, but was a fun kind of person. We hit it off right away in 1966. Maybe it was the size difference, she was about 5'2 and I was 6'+ ? She probably liked that I filled up that small kitchen in their 50's house while munching down some snacks.

During the 1967 senior year for me in college, we were both in the same Physical Geography class at Long Beach State College! I needed one last Geography class for credit and she was finishing up her Bachelor’s Degree that she had put off since 1941.

That was a fun class, but I was impressed with the gumption to go back to school to finish what she started 26 years ago. She needed another year to get her degree and had a full load of classes that semester. We actually studied together and both got an “A” in the class. I was always a nut for all things Geography and Weather, so this class was a perfect one to end my 4 years.

As a matter of fact, my last semester was the most fun, as the classes I took were those elective "filler" classes. These were the ones where you had fun, learned things and you were not under pressure to boost that overall GPA. Art Metal, Advanced Photography, Physical Geography, and a fun, competitive Basketball Class. What a way to go out…

Within 1.5 years, Great Grandma finished her last class and got her college degree with honors. Yea for her !!! Just in time to be a proud Mom at an important wedding in 1968.

We did not know about the homecoming event until many years later, while going through some very old family photograph albums.

She has been gone now for about 18 years, but will always stay in our minds. What a great lady. She has always liked driving convertibles.

Maybe it was the experiences when her family had those open roadsters back in the 30's. But she even was able to handle an 80's foreign car, 5 speed, black convertible with those "great" (at the time) gold color BBS rims. Yes, we helped her pick out those flashy rims to go with her all-black, 5 speed, convertible. (It was the sign of the times, in the 80's)

@Ryan if UCSB electives are anything like the ones at SDSU when my son went there (graduated 2015) she will find plenty of "unique" courses. Like Sociology of surfing that my son took his senior year.

Her course load is insane. She's entering school as a sophomore due to college credits she's already gained, so her schedule is a ton of science, chemistry, and math... Plus, because of her scholarship she has to maintain a 3.8 or higher GPA. She wants to be a forensic scientist as of now.

Anyway, I leave on Tuesday... And then start my way home the next Sunday...

Very impressive. All those science courses probably include labs so she'll definitely be busy.
