I don't think there is a perfect car for a custom. I've seen really nice customs in
quite a few different makes and models.

Found a pic of the old Fleetline from way back....disregard the roller wheels....I know I responded to my own comment. Trying to tie them together. I'm not that vain.... Fleetline.jpg

Not sure about perfect, but I have always been very intrigued by the 1948 Chrysler New Yorker 3 Window Coupe. There's just something about the equal length hood and trunk with the pilot house right in the middle that offers fascinating possibilties for a custom.

A couple that have been embedded in my memories for many years. I would sell off everything I own if I was ever given the opportunity to be the next caretaker of Hub's 60 Buick.

I never cared much for custom cars until I saw the ZZ Top Cadillac. Changed my mind..

    Hello,

I think back to the Summer of 63 and my friend, Gary Gabelich asked me if I wanted to see another 58 Impala. I had not gone to the beach and my 58 Impala was the car I was using at the time. So, I said yes and we took off for a different part of Long Beach. When we arrived, it was not a place I was familiar with and he knew the owner of the custom car.

When we saw the Impala in the garage, it was covered and the owner, Mox Miller allowed us to roll back the cover and see his creation up close and intricately. We had seen it in auditorium car shows, but never in person. I was totally impressed. He looked at my Impala parked in the street and I had just had Henry’s Machine shop in Bixby Knolls convert my Chevy axles and hubs to Buick bolt patterns. So, I, too, had Buick Skylark wire wheels on my black Impala. He liked the look. I was tempted to see if he wanted to trade for his wheels… I would have to revert my changeover back to Chevy, but it may have been worth it. Yikes!
upload_2024-9-24_2-39-54.png thanks for the great photo... @themoose
Every time I see a photo of Mox Miller’s 58 Impala with those wheels, envy sets in and the memory of seeing them up close and personal at his house rings true. It was real and so out of the normal everyday cruising hot rod scene, but boy, they looked outstanding close or far away...YRMV

If the "magnesium" wheel is not available like the pristine ones on Mox Miller's Impala and the look of something we wanted in 1960-65, the the 5 spoke American Racing Equipment company wheels would be our choice. But, it would have been a great trade of the Skylark wires versus the 5 spoke custom wheels.

When we saw the Mox Miller Impala motor, our eyes went "googly-eyed" at what we were seeing. No one thought of a small supercharger on a motor, let alone one that would fit under a closed hood. A supercharger sticking out of a hood with a scoop was the "normal" arrangement. But, this Impala motor had all of the details and ingenuity to be able to shut the hood for the super clean look.

Gary Gabelich was now, entrenched in the top fuel race cars and his contact with different motors was noted. But, when he saw the Mox Miller version of the 348 motor, he, too, was impressed.

Here is a close up of the cool rear seat cover including the insert opening for the Impala emblem. If we had one of those, then our friends could have been underneath it, when we went to the “one car load cost” drive-in theater locations. That would have been better than getting in the trunk and climbing through the removable rear seat back. Or, waiting in the darkened back row until the white coat guys left us alone.
    HA !

What a day it was, seeing the custom 58 Impala up closer than we had ever seen it before, in the car shows. There was a lot of detailing and custom items designed and shown. Chrome? Yes, of course.

    Note:

Here are some notes from the publications to cloud the issue of custom cars:
