Hot Rods What Color Should an Anglia /Prefect Be?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mitchell Rish, Sep 23, 2024.

  1. If you listen to the car, late at night in the garage when everyone else is asleep, it will tell you what color it wants to be.

Pearl White base, Candy red with lace panels. Red tint plexiglass windows. There. I've said I was 70 without saying I was 70...

I was gonna suggest red oxide primer, but I guess you already tried that

My suggestion is something simple with just lettering. The over the top paint jobs just don't look "racey" and they detract from what should be the focal point of these cars............the race parts. Its like a desirable woman who put too much cheap make up on (IMHO). There are a lot of variations of white.....I'd look at some of the newer vehicles and pick a white (not pearly white like my wife's SUV), but there are some really nice whites that will make your car standout and easy to clean. Then don't over do the lettering (lipstick), use the KISS principle.:)

Also, white is easier to touch up and buff out when mistakes are made..........

OK mine isn't an Anglia, it's an Austin gasser. I had it painted in 2012 in a 1974 Corvette #74 Dark Red Metallic. It has lot of fine metallic in it and really sparkles in the sun, or under the lights. I love the color!

No offense intended, Mark. Trying for a little lightheartedness. Obviously did not work.

I STILL do not like gold!!

What kind of car project would this be if you had the right color on hand? Go out and buy more paint! Get a new spray gun, too. Keep the paint guys in business and support the local economy. Win-win!

Indeed I would be afraid to ask how much that cost. But it’s dang sure sharp. I have never seen that car. I recognize one name on the Door. I am thinking that he helped me along with Harry Blecha on the final version of my blown six. ( as in information on figuring out what not to do) Let’s say they helped me figure out how to keep it together lol.
Also 41 GMC K 18 any chance of getting a picture of the power plant. I am a sucker for a straight six of any make.

Orange always works on an Anglia. Like one I considered 'round '74. Well done, but the choice of a slant 6 for power made interior even smaller than normal. $2K, I passed...

I'm working on one with green in mind, with a yellow/gold panel painted roof, half white rear wheels, and yellow window tinting, a la 60s gasser. Here's a concept sketch.

    TFF that’s gonna be sharp.
I have considered using the mold lines and belt lines and maybe pin stripping.
Here is a secret I have to confess. I love the Panella Trucking color. But I am a single stage kinda person. ( I struggle with anything other than that -and as you guys can see by the Willy’s I can even screw that up.)
Here’s another question is the Panella Trucking Anglia Red or Orange? I have seen it called both.

I filled the top and will cover it with Ford factory Roof Vinyl and then use the factory rubber gasket in the groove. Will use a 1/2 layer of poly to give it the look. Loudbang got me hooked on that a few years ago with some pics he sent me.

And to answer the other question Squirrel that’s a High fill Clausen Primer. It’s designed to fill in imperfections and pits in metal without having to slop on a bunch of filler. It did very well. This car was solid but it had pits in a few places.
Keep it coming. As I block and sand something will grow on me. I do love reds, oranges etc. but I want to see what you guys have done. Need to pick up /learn from the best. You Guys.

the Panella Anglia was Candy apple red over a gold base. a beautiful car but candy paint is far from your "single stage" comfort zone

    Yes it is.
I screwed up the clear ( last coat in two places ) and had to cut and buff the Willy’s. There are two places I am still not happy with. Micky decided to order the clear and told me when it arrived. For what he paid I didn’t want to hurt his feelings so you know the rest of it.
I have no intentions in clearing the Prefect.

    Hello,

All of the colors since an Anglia was introduced to drag racing around 1964 is one of the most varied color schemes around. Yes, the Model A has been around a lot longer and so has a popular 32 coupe/sedan. but, it all points back to the basics: “Any color the customer wants, as long as it’s black.” Henry Ford

Having owned several black hot rods, cruisers, (including one of my wife’s choice of a modern sporty sedan) and a drag race/street legal car that was ready for paint color of choice, (it was not black.) we do like black as a hot rod color. The colors are nice if you want to draw attention everywhere you go.

But, as someone pointed out, for us a bright orange sporty car driven by my wife for 12 years, we were cautious when we were on the road. It was good to be cautious = no tickets. But, the car stood out everywhere we went, which was not our intended choice as a result of a bright color. When she wanted and got a black sporty coupe for her daily driver, it was black, inside and out. Now, it was up to me to keep the black in pristine condition.

Pristine was good, as it kept me out in the garage on the weekends cleaning the all black sedan. When my wife drove it to visit friends and go shopping, it was parked out in the outskirts of empty spaces, due to not wanting anyone to bang the door or car carelessly. It was never parked into a tight squeeze parking space. But, again, when it got home, it was cleaned and ready for the next excursion. At the time, my car was silver/grey and it needed little to keep it clean. Silver is one of those colors that keeps the dirt and whatever at bay for longer periods of all weather driving. It still needs a good coat of Colonite Carnuba Wax, but the daily upkeep comparison to the black car was night and day.

We took it on a long up the coast road trip and the whole time it was outside fighting the elements in the various parking spots. But, due to the careful detailing and multiple coats of Carnuba Colonite Paste Wax, it fought the elements and a simple spray wash was needed in the middle of the two week road trip.

So, the careful attention I had to give the black 58 Impala with multiple different waxes as they became apparent the protection is needed, it had the deepest shine on any of the teenage cruising cars of the time. That paint lasted until we said goodbye in 1965 as a young teenager bought it for his first car and he could not get that smile off his face the whole time we were going over the specifics.
upload_2024-9-26_2-10-26.png months before the last goodbye… thanks @themoose

The last goodbye with black Buick steel rims and blackwall tires…

I feel a small body hot rod needs a dark color and black is the only color that would make the Anglia stand out. Yes, black is a popular color, but look at the variety of colors/designs presented and not one is a black painted Anglia, 4 door hot rod.
upload_2024-9-26_2-12-9.png Yes, not an Anglia sedan but the deep, black color gives off the rich quality of the build.

But, wait, luckily I was in the art arena having a go at a two door Anglia drag race car for a Friday Art post. It has gone in and out of the rotation various times due to wanting to try drawing something that clicks, when I see a nice design or one that we knew at one time.

The artwork might not be your bag of tea, but, it is the only black one presented, so far… We would like it better than a sedan delivery for daily driving on the street. The full window greenhouse would lessen the anxiety of any blind spots on the passenger rear area, like any sedan delivery. YRMV

Can you believe I just found this in inventory. Gotta be from the round track wars. Micky always liked his stuff to stand out. Full gallon.
