My father loved this forum. His Name was: bob da bear (2010?)

My father's gone now. He left behind his beloved 1932 Roadster. Many of its parts and pieces have been in the family for as long as I can remember. My father didn't leave much information but we have photos. Most of his car friends who helped him are gone too now.

This what I know:
It's a Ford steel body surrounded by lots of chrome. It includes a channeled frame, split wishbone front-end suspension, and radius chrome steering rods with vintage bias ply tires. It features a louvered trunk lid, stainless steel floor and battery box located in the trunk.
At the heart of this vintage beauty sits a Flathead powerhouse. The Flathead has a three deuce setup, Offenhauser heads. There’s also stainless steel straight pipes, coupled with a 3 speed transmission.

This 32 Roadster has room for two passengers with a canvas convertible top providing an extra layer of protection for you and your sweetheart. The cabin has red leather upholstery wrapped around the cabin and bench seat.

He registered it HISTORICAL and it has a NYS Transferrable Registration/Title (NY) as far back as 2001(?) (My father said I just needed the NYS Transferable Registration/Title in order to sell it.)

It's really beautiful and runs great. It is part of the Estate so it must be sold.

Model Year 1972 or Older
The acceptable proof of ownership is either

• a NY State Transferable Registration – must be the original or a certified copy, not a photocopy
• acceptable proof from another state (Different states issue different documents for ownership and transfer of older vehicles. Make sure that is the acceptable proof of ownership in the state that issued the document.)

To transfer ownership

• the owner can use the transferable registration and a bill of sale
• make sure the registration document is marked "transferable" on the front
• the seller whose name appears on the transferable registration must sign the back

Many of the 'well known' auction places should be researched before you contract with them. Some require you to sign the title over to them, pay all shipping, pay fees, and if something happens like it did in Scottsdale a few years back, they accept no responsibility. Talk to your insurance Co. before listing the car, too. If you can, try to get an appraisal if this is a high value car. There are scammers in this arena, too so be careful.
You didn't mention his name or user name, that might help us determine what the car's value is if he posted about it.
I'll also say that I'm sorry for your loss.

 

Most auction houses (Barret, Mecum, etc) require not just a photo of the VIN but the title itself to register for an auction. Once they have the title, it is theirs to sell, no take backs. The same is true of high end consignment lots. You send them the car and the title, you get a check when it sells. Always deal with reputable companies.

 

I'm located in NYS. I have a '32 pickup with a transferable registration. I could not find a stamped serial (VIN) number in any of the locations on the chassis where they should be located. From my experience you probably won't get a lot of assistance from DMV. You may want to consider having the vehicle appraised and look into a private sale after some advertisements. Depending on your location I could suggest an appraiser who has been involved in collector cars for decades. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.

 

Post some information about where your dad was from. What shows he and the car might have attended. When the car was built, if he built it or had it built and lastly lots of pictures. As Rod said someone will know the car and be of help, sorry for your loss

The serial number (mistakenly called a VIN in modern terminology) on a 32 Ford is on top of the front flange of the original transmission, the top left frame rail right where the firewall rests, on top of the left frame rail about the back edge of the door, and again left frame rail where the frame kicks up before the rear axle. You can’t find two of those without removing the body. The transmission has probably been replaced. The only place left is the one near the firewall foot.

There are lots of broker-type agencies that list your car on their website. Some of them come to you and take all the photos and write the copy, some of them do less and you will have to do a little more. In some cases, buyers may come directly to you to do the horsetrading part...... some of the brokers have there own showrooms where you have to bring the car.
Also, be aware that once you "list" a car you may become a magnet for "flippers" who want to buy low and resell high.
You have to look at your options. If you want to be insulated from the gypsies you'll have to pay a broker a bit more for him to be a middleman. If you want to pay a bit less and skip some of the broker services, you'll have to stay in the kitchen and take the heat.
If you find a buyer that you feel good about, that he will maintain the car, keep it running, and honor the blood, sweat, and tears your father put in it, it could be worth it to you to work with him on the price instead of hanging on for top dollar.
Where are you and the car located? Someone close might have an idea for you that has good potential.

 

That's a good idea for forum members who have a quota of seasoned posts here and have run the gauntlet to prove they're not a scammer or a flake. It's certainly good advice for anyone "known" to the rest of us. But you never know...... anyone here could take a ride and check the car out...... and maybe make a fair offer.

Sell it yourself or expect to lose 10-30% of the value to have someone do the work for you.
Nice 32 roadsters with flatheads are good sellers and generally seen in the $40-80,000 range here in SoCal. Your area may vary.
Bring A Trailer is a viable auction that gets a lot of attention and good money. You can also set a reserve. They'll send someone to take photos and also write the ad copy with enough ambiguity that you can't get sued for a bad description. Make sure the car is running well and detailed before the photos.

My father was from Buffalo, New York. He was a Chevy Worker. His nickname was Bear.
He won a trophy for it at Olcott Beach Car Show in 2003. He did not show it often. He worked on it in his garage with friends until he became ill. The body has been in our family for years and I'm not sure about the rest of it. He said something about it having matching numbers?
I think the oldest Registration we found was from 2001? I have a stack of them, some old manuals, and receipts. And I think we have photos albums of him working on it.

Please talk to your children more about these cars. Maybe make some recordings?

The auction place is a well-known name and valued it closer to the higher end of your estimate. They said there were no recent comps because most of these for sale now are reproductions.

I was already low-balled at $30,000; which was rejected. I've already had to deal with few umm... people.
I can't trailer it anywhere; I'm not a car person.
But I can let interested buyers see it, if they are serious.

I would not buy a car that does not have a number on it that matches the title/registration. You might want to make another effort to see if you can sort this out. It's important.
