I think it was in Smokey Yunick's book that I read this. At the time that Hudson's were dominating you had to run ALL factory parts. At the end of a race a factory engineer tore down the winner to make sure only factory parts were used. Smokey cast a new cam with factory part numbers in it to make the engine run backwards for more torque off the corners. He won and the factory guy found the part number and certified it as the real deal. MY HERO.
hmm. what about the oil pump and distributor? firing pattern no issue but don't the cam gear pull the dizzy down normally. Water pump? fan? And then the trans gears thrust bearing may not like running in reverse. not seeing it.
