  7. Today was rear axle day. I got the 12 bolt set in place on the new, offset axle saddles. I don’t have anything welded up yet, because I’m waiting to set pinion angle in reference to where the transmission output shaft lands. After this I pulled the Muncie 318? 319? out. Compared to the giant Roadrangers I deal with at work, this 3 speed is downright tiny. IMG_8243.jpeg IMG_8244.jpeg IMG_8245.jpeg IMG_8246.jpeg IMG_8247.jpeg

20241005_152119.jpg 20241005_153129.jpg My friend Mark did some repairs to the Tempest hood. It was all bent and cracked in the hinge area, this seems to be a common problem on early tempests.

  10. A local Tempest that used to race at Niagara Drag Strip in the 60's, ran a crossram sbc, don't remember the trans but had an Olds 9.3 out back.
A friend was able to buy it about 10 yrs ago, got it back to roadworthy status with a sbc/automatic then sold it.

Still waiting on pistons so I polished my Wilcap adaptor for my Muncie that's going on my 303. Drove my fairlane on cruise night last Tuesday and had some chatter on the new clutch so yesterday was the day to adjust it. Drove it in your 60 mile an hour wind and was alot better. 20241006_124618.jpg

I am working on finding any place within 100-miles that has 15/16" cup-style core plugs in stock, and if so, more than just one.

Blower build weekend is not progressing as I had intended.

    Oops.

  18. I didn’t get much time today to have fun in the shop between Church and Birthday party. But I did the hood off and started on engine removal. IMG_8261.jpeg IMG_8262.jpeg IMG_8263.jpeg

  19. I revisited my off center steering wheel AGAIN, couple weeks ago I re-clocked it because it was a little off, figured everything finally settled in place so I put it straight.
I'll be damned if it didn't go back somehow, everything felt fine while driving and steering but it was clocked to the left again.
I went under the car to give everything a once over to make sure nothing was loose, turns out the jam nuts on the drag link were loose letting it lengthen and knock the steering wheel off kilter.
When I straightened everything out underneath I had to move the steering wheel back the same amount I had moved it previously. I can only assume I didn't tighten them because the tie-rod jam nuts were still tight.

Someone took this cool shot yesterday of the J at a fundraiser for my friend's shop that burnt.

After straightening the steering wheel on the Henry J I cleaned all the fiberglass sanding dust from the engine on the 41 and let it run a bit, then put another 5 fresh gallons in it.

All I can work on is recuperating from my colon cancer surgery, my 3rd cancer so far and I don't want to battle cancer a 4th time!

  23. Finished installing the headliner on my 53. First bow style headliner Ive worked with in decades and the first one period I did the full install on by myself. Still trip on how much more complete it makes the interior loo IMG_20241006_170305330_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170308025_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170314446_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170319064_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170323823_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170328173_HDR.jpg IMG_20241006_170331077_HDR.jpg

I hope I'm done working on the car, because we leave tomorrow morning. All packed....even fit in her chair, since she'll be sitting around a lot waiting for me to race.

  27. Smart man, packing her chair. Have fun!

  28. I only had an hour after work today, so not much got done. The engine is ready to pull, I just have to remove the bolts from the front motor mount. It is so therapeutic to come home and work on something so delightfully uncluttered. Especially after putting the injectors and high pressure fuel pump off of a 2020 F-550! Talk about 10lbs of shit in a 5 lbs bag!! IMG_8272.jpeg IMG_8271.jpeg IMG_8270.jpeg

Yes, cancer is a terrible thing, I will keep Laura and you in my prayers. Keeping a positive attitude is the best way to deal with this, IMHO.............at least it has helped me get thru 3 cancers, so far!

Working on setting the engine into the 51. I keep thinking about that little SE Aisian dude, Sum Ting Wong. With the block against the fire wall, The lower blower gear sits about half way through the radiator. I held the engine in place with the engine hoist. I can trim the support ribs off the firewall and gain about an inch maybe a hair more. I was going to put the belts on and mount the accessories after I mounted the engine to the frame. Now, I am going to rig the engine and work out if the radiator moves forward and if so how far, or am I trimming the firewall and maybe setting it back some.
I spent some time playing with spacers to get the blower pullies to line up. Found a water pump pully that is 1:1 with the crank pully and I now have blower pullies and crank to water pump pullies in line. I still have to mount the power steering pump, the alternator and decide IF I'm going to put AC in the car. Once it is all dressed, I'll take it back to the car and see how much space I have to work with for the battery radiator, heater core, ect. I'll put the steering column in it and see if it will clear the headers. The regular headers will be tight and my wheel well headers for the pulling truck give hope that the wheel well dump headers will be a viable option. With the front clip off the car, I am struggling with the thought of making it a flip front. And if I go down that rabbit hole, do I cut and weld the metal up or do I make a mold and make a glass front end. And getting squirrelled with possibilities is why it isn't driving already. Well that and I just got the engine back after the guy helping came down with COVID.
