Helping my folks prep their old garage for demo. Really old stuff coming to light. Found this old wheelcover that came on my '65 Rambler (obviously not original to the car) when I bought it in 1991. I have two in decent shape. No stamping of any letters, numbers, etc anywhere on the back. It is a handsome design kind of evocative of the caddy sombrero.... Anyway, I figure it will take someone all of 2 seconds on here to ID it. I do not recognize the emblem. Thanks, wizards.
I feel kinda embarrassed knowing it was something so common, in hindsight. Does anybody know what that center design represents.....? Star. winged-thingy, acorns.....? Doesn't really scream "Oldsmobile" in my mind.
Created in 1929, the original Oldsmobile crest appeared in modified form for some years. This crest included many elements symbolizing Oldsmobile's increasing prominence in the automobile industry. The winged spur (which looks like a phoenix) at its center represented harnessing horsepower; the acorns acknowledged Oldsmobile as a seed that helped grow the automobile industry. Also included is the Lamp of Knowledge and micrometer and a triangle signifying research, exactness and precision. This crest would continue to be used on various models and hub caps. It looks on different shapes until it was transformed into a Rocket in the late fifties.
Pretty sure this cap ran from 1950 to 1953, although the outside edge changed slightly somewhere during that period. One is smoother while one has more of a pronounced lip.
How ironic!! Monday I was in a friend's garage. He's a Rambler guy. He says "I bet you don't know what that hub cap is" He was right. It is the same one you have!! He said 53 Oldsmobile
