So, I've discovered one thing I need for my 50 and cannot find, so I'm exploring plans C-E. Anyone modified a 51 hood to work with 49-50 front grill?
They used to sell kits for 49/50 to fill the front of the hood and a filler panel for the grill bar to get rid of the center piece of 49/50 grills but I have never seen anyone hack up a 51 hood to fit the older cars. From there your metal cutting and shaping abilities come into play .
Not my strongest skill set, but I am pretty handy with a 4in grinder. It's plan E. However, this hood is perfect to attempt it as the rock-a-billy rejects cut the front support out of it
there surely has to be the correct hood out there somewhere. perhaps if you had your location in your profile someone local could possibly help. Have you checked with French lake auto parts in Annandale Mn? they have thousands of cars in the yard from the 20's thru the 60,s and will ship parts. have you tried a wanted ad in the classifieds here?
This is like a rule with old cars. Bad part? Get good part. Good part too expensive? Fix bad part. Can’t fix bad part? Save money, get good part. A 1951 Hood is not the part. 49-50 is. Don’t waste time/money on screwing up a decent ‘51 hood. Get a decent 49-50 hood or parts car. They are around.
Can you weld? If you cut a 51 hood with a 4” cutoff wheel chances are good that cuts are going to be jagged and you will need to weld some 1/8” rod to smooth it out. You mentioned a custom grille, I’m partial to 51 Plymouth grilles no cutting required.
That's the thing, it's straight, but the nerds that ratrodded it all up cut the front support out. Secondly, I'm pretty far into thr 49 grill. It's an option I'm keeping open though
I'm in NE TN. I'm not against paying for shipping, just not super desperate yet. Again, just kinda weighing options in case I don't find anything
This is the kind of tip I'm looking for, connections. NETN is a long ways from MN, but, it's definitely worth looking into. I wrote shoebox central, he said they didn't have anything right now which was pretty deflating.
Hey everyone, appreciate the insight, I'm not on the ledge just kinda looking at alternative routes. Thanks again
Hoods are over rated. It’s a bolt on item. It’s one of those items you wait on (passively search for) as you fix more pressing issues. So, you can look around find a good one, the right one that fits.
This is my current vibe. I'll figure it out later... Now that I've moved on to something else, check this out. Found these vent windows NOS in original box, but the little hinge thingy is different...
Post an ad in the wanted forum: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forums/wanted.30/ 1950 Ford hood.
Something I was thinking. Said original hood was nice but they cut the inner stuff out. If they cut that stuff out what's keeping you from welding it back in?
I think it’s the hood he acquired that the insides were cut out, which as is, doesn’t work/fit properly to his car. That’s why he was up for modifying it.
If I had it, it would be an option. The jerks that abused this car cut the lower/front support out of it. They did the same to the trunk lid, and inexplicably cut the inside of the door in half and screwed it together. We're gonna get there. Like the man in black said, 1 piece at a time. I'm told the 49 and 50 Hoods are also different, I understood the hinges were different but someone else is insisting the Hoods are completely different Anyone have a definitive answer here?
