Hot Rods 1958 Imperial valve cover threaded inserts?

Is there anyone that knows what the threaded holes are for in a 1958 Imperial Hemi valve cover?

Wow, this is going way back in the Memory files. I believe that would be the passenger side only valve cover and those 2 are mounts for the Air Cleaner Can that sat off the side of the Carb. Those were Big motors in a low-profile compartment. Not much vertical space above the motor.

 

I believe they are for the plug wire covers.

 

He is asking about the extra holes shown in the pics below the wire cover area, I think.
This has a few engine shots that don't show the exact area clearly, but back up the air cleaner guess.

I think he's asking about the 2 raised bosses below the spark plug holes between front and second ones.

 

Yes, the extra 2 holes shown in my picture. Thanks for the picture link. It does not show any air cleaner bracket clearly and the driver side picture shows the holes but you cannot see what if anything is bolted to it.
I have other 58 Imperial valve covers without the threaded holes.
I once had a 56 New Yorker with the same type of air cleaner and the bracket was supported by one of the wire cover screws.

 

Any night shift Hemi guys shed some light on these extra 2 threaded holes.
After searching the internet for pictures I cannot find any clear photos of the passenger side that could show if the air cleaner attaches there. Pictures do show the drivers side valve cover with the holes but I cannot see if anything bolts up to it on the drivers side. I have other Imperial covers without these threaded inserts.

I’m going to guess the a/c cars since the compressor sits up on that side. It’s mounting point for the line brackets.

Was looking at the passenger side lol. Almost looks like a bolt and some type of line screwed into the driver side?

 

Imperials with A/C used an oil pressure fed recirc. door on the HVAC. These are the oil pressure and return ports. How do I know, I have one and it all works.

 

Interesting ….Where does the oil pressure feed under the cover come from?

 

see-i KNEW we needed jim and a factory pic...some kind of steel tube 'bumps' up under there??

 

FYI, I checked the 55 Imperial we have at work and it doesn't have those to lower bolt holes.

 

Looking at a 58 Imperial engine that a couple of youtube yahoos who are probably in my neck of the woods pulled out of a pretty decent looking but surface rusted 58 imperial sedan to put in a junky 60's Dodge square pickup it does not have those bungs making what ever fastened to them an option.

Blowing the photo that MCjim posted makes it look like two lines were fastened to what ever fittings went in those holes. That may mean that you need a plug of some sort rather than a screw or bolt.
If you know the exact year of the engine I would be looking for a factory service manual for that year of imperial and that might take going on Alpar and going to the section for late 50's Chryslers and Imperials.

That pic is from the link I posted. Top of the line. The engine pull pics doesn't have the big HVAC plenum, but that might have been a prior step.

From a friend with a restored Imperial LeBaron.... And I know this has already been posted. EDIT: I didn't notice Ernie had posted this as he is"the friend".


Imperial only used an oil pressure fed recirc door on the HVAC system. These are the oil feed and return ports.

 

Actually this gentleman beat everyone to it.

 

Ok, I have confirmed these 2 holes have 1/8" NPT holes.
I do not see how one of them could possibly be a pressure port for the HVAC door.
I****ume that the HVAC door gets it pressure feed from the engine pressure port next to the distributor.
I also****ume that one of these 1/8" NPT holes is for a oil return line. What about the second 1/8" port?
This mystery is getting close to being solved.

Usually that is on a 10 year old long dead thread rather than a less than 4 year old thread where his post gave McJim and me and others that tid bit of info that let us search for the info.

I did find the link to a batch of Mopar shop manuals that are online that I shared with a Mopar freak friend.
At least now a couple of npt brass plugs will plug the holes and the valve cover is actually the left side cover rather than the right side one.

MCjim posted a picture that shows these same NPT ports on a Chrysler Fire Power valve cover so they are not unique to the 58 Imperials.
I would still like to know where these lines hookup to. Nothing under that valve cover would supply oil pressure.

The rocker shafts are pressurized, but how do you connect from there to the inside of the cover, then bolt it on without the hose (?) getting tangled in everything?

 

I am****uming that the oil pressure feed to the HVAC door would come from a tee at the oil pressure sending unit next to the distributor. Not from the oil rocker shaft under the valve cover.
One of the 1/8" NPT ports could be used for a oil return line?
What about the other 1/8" port?
This mystery is not yet solved.

 

I'm looking at the diagram in the upper right hand corner of the scan from the manual. The solenoid valve and the piston****embly each have a return line. In the pic it shows them teed together, but I'll bet in actual production they are two separate lines to the cover. So both fittings are returns.
