The great Paul Bigsby Crocker shop foreman and electric guitar pioneer he’s quoted as saying that if you can draw a picture of anything I can make it he is a hero in both motorcycling and guitars

    Hello,

When my wife and I were visiting Victoria, B.C. one year, it was a fabulous road trip. The ferry ride over was interesting as we had to park on a side vertical ramp inside of the ferry, due to the amount of cars trying to cross over into Victoria. (actually, it was north of Victoria in a small coastal city called Sidney.) Then the time spent driving all around the coastal waters and cool inlets was a great way to enjoy the northern areas we had never gone before. No, it was not during the Deuce Days.

When we got our directions and centered on the city plus harbor, now it was like driving around in our own familiar place. The harbor was an envious place. If we had ever thought of moving our sailboat North, this is the place we would like to dock and start our coastal exploring. But, as we found out from other sailboat owners, it is nice looking, but some of the inlets to the ocean and various islands has currents that we never saw in So Cal. So, crossing them would be difficult and it may not be the way we wanted to go, anyway.

On the ferry, the powerful motors just blast over the currents. But, we were watching a smaller 25-30 foot older sailboat just bobbing in the water. As we passed the old sailboat, he was not going in any direction, after bobbing over the wake of the ferry. We drove along the coastlines and saw currents that sailboats in wind could make the directional sail. Power from the motor would be easy, but, hey… this is a sailboat, not a powerboat.

We love to sail all over the places we have traveled, from lakes areas to the vast ocean near our house. Directional winds always make us know where we are going and coming home. But, we have not had to deal with strong currents that make the travel slower, even with some winds pushing us in the right direction. So, for every beautiful location on the water, there is a drawback. Here in Canada + the San Juan Islands, it is the current. YRMV

But, this memory has stayed with us ever since our first introduction way back then... Despite the old song lyrics:

“Well, they're out there a-havin' fun
    In that warm California sun…”
