Of all the years playing with and having them I never knew that front wheel studs and rear wheel studs are not the same knurl size for Chevy Tri Fives. Then again, I’ve never done all four corners at the same time nor looked them up together.
Interesting, I’d have never guessed. My dad showed me how to do the studs on the ‘57 PU, brought a bag of 24 and got busy one afternoon. Out with the old, in with the new.
So you actually ran into this? I see you mention the 55 vs 57. I do know that early 55’s had different front hubs. A carry over from 54 is what’s been told. Conflicting info out there on wheel studs. I’m reading front and rear should have a knurl size of .557, not .564 or .575 as RockAuto list’s. I won’t be buying anything until I’ve extracted some samples to measure.
FYI guy’s. I don’t know when I’ll have an answer/get on this. Father in-law came home yesterday under hospice care. In the mean time talking about the studs is the most I can do right now.
Praying for your family and your father in law for this troubling time. Spend the time and make memories during the good times in this time frame. Don't let anything important go left unsaid, use this precious time you have been given to show all the love you have for each other.
Thinking about you and your family. The hubs I got from a friend had different sized studs than my rear axles.
Usually, the rear drums come off the axle flange (except those with a removable rear hub), but the front drums come off still attached to the hub. Maybe the shorter knurling on the rear studs are so the drum doesn't get caught on the axle flange and can be more easily removed?
Knurl diameter is what’s questionable. As for front drum’s to hub. Three rivet’s is what holds the drum in place. Those rivet’s get removed when doing aftermarket wheels.
Have not gotten to wheel studs. Did take a few minutes to do a trial fit. Too much on my mind and really not wanting to go with direct fit SS’s because they use conical style lugs. However they offer more back space/offset options than mag shank style lug SS’s. So I’m ordering another set of 15 8’s with a deeper back space to get tire off the 1/4 panel lip. Good news is I have these sold already. Sneak peak
57 is going to look so cool with the cragars. Very sorry to hear about your father in law. Thoughts and prayers for your family.
Thank you. The end happpened 20 minutes ago. I was with him the whole last hour comforting and monitoring. 4 plus years I cared for him.
Hubs carried over? I knew 53/54 used the same drums. Guess I'll keep my original front hubs in my tri five parts stash lol
Johnny, I am so sorry. Went through the same with my dad in July. I'm still devastated. He was lucky to have you at his side.
In preparation to a renewed return to wrenching I’m ending any further comments upon this thread after these few words. Lino liked when we would take him to and from dialysis in Carina’s 56. Only fitting that we escorted him with it today.
