Jim Cassady’s Hemi powered street roadster version one

There were two versions of the street roadster from the Jim Cassidy/Junior Thompson camp. One was the early version above and the other version we saw regularly at Lion’s Dragstrip in 59-60 era.

The one thing we noticed was that no street roadster looked like that on the legal streets of Bixby Knolls or anywhere we traveled. But, as far as the local/national rules were concerned, it fit perfectly with the specific street legal ruling.

For such a lightweight roadster body, the Hemi power was sometimes a handful upon full acceleration off of the line. In the above film from :05 to :10 sec, he turns the wheel to correct the direction of the roadster to the straight line course. Left, right, left, etc. count the times it happens in 5 seconds. Who knows how many times in the same film he turns left/right again.

Was this left/right steering wheel turning a common place for this street roadster’s power? In the second race against the light blue street roadster, the left/right steering action continues straight off of the starting line. That is some power versus the light weight body and chassis. Eventually, he gets it straight and wins more than he loses. So there is that… YRMV
