What I find most interesting is there appears to be a '50 Studebaker bullet nose made into a pickup using a '37 Stude rear window in one of those pictures.

Thanks for diving into a computer niche that would annoy and frustrate me.
There are obvious spots where it's failed, but the tech is new and will get better.
I hope you continue to tweak your program so it can be applied to even more vintage photos.
I'm curious about run times and how much intervention is needed to get a decent outcome. Is this a push button and get result in under a minute or is it hit a button and get 10 results that need to be judged?

 

Ryan, once you have cleared your head and can go back into this mess, is it possible to ask it to provide say ten results, judge and rate then use that as learning, as I mentioned in the query?
As superfastmatt says fail quickly to get to where you succeed.
EDIT: I'm thinking of those machine learning captchas where you tell it which ones are 'right'. Have 4-6 different 'results' and pick the best ones, reject the worst. Over time, it should get better (Ha!).
I still have the group meet in the coffee shop on my desktop.


P.S> I have NO idea how to program learning, so I know that saying 'tell it this is better x1000" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, like saying 'paint the chapel ceiling".

Your colorization story reminds me of the early days of color television.
My father was a techie in the TV production businees for NBC in Chicago. In 1954, we received one of the very first production color TVs from RCA, the owner of NBC at that time, for our home.

We all took our turns learning to adjust color and tint controls to get the correct skin tones of our newscasters on the live local news, on Channel 5, of course.

 

I miss those Photomats, there was one about a quarter mile from me, it's a coffee shack now.

 

This reminds me a little of the thousand-or-so years when we forgot how to make concrete.

This may be a long shot @Ryan, and it's four years old, but mebbe this guy can be tracked down to help:

I think that is the ultimate C&H cartoon. I told my kids that story, and they believed it for a few hours. I also tried telling the kids the same story my cousin's told their kids: the only time the ice-cream van plays music is when it has run out of icecream. My wife caught me telling them that one, and I was violently reprimanded .

One of my favorites, these are pictures of black and white pictures of a roadster that was built by, and belonged to, a friend of mine's flight instructor. I'd love to see either (or both) in color.



I'm going to assume that the weeds are green and maybe slightly brown-ish since they look a bit dry in this pic, those little flower heads are yellow and the guy's jumpsuit is probably blue, at least that's how I always imagined it. The car sure looks black, but every dark colored car looks black in a black and white picture, so I don't know.

Unless there's some known colors it's all guess work. In B&W photo some guys & myself look like we were all wearing the same color pants, but the others were wearing light blue & I was wearing light brown....

 

That "sex machine" captures the era, for sure.

 

That's pretty impressive. Another 2 or 3 minutes with the GIMP to make the tires tire-colored again and maybe a couple other color spots changed around and it looks pretty damned close I'd say. Impressive results for so little time spent. This kind of AI work I can get behind.
