Hello, It pays to drop by an old neighborhood gas station almost on a daily basis to and from walking to school one of the benefits was to talk to the owner. He knew our dad and was the most informative older guy we knew. His knowledge of cars was amazing. But, he was not the main mechanic, that guy was out back in the garage work area and he too, knew his Flathead/OHV stuff. Almost everyday on the way to school, we would wave hello or just stop to say hello. On the way home from a hot day at school, if we had any money left over, we would get a freezing bottle of Coke from his interesting sliding Coke bottle machine. We would sit there with him and have our freezing cokes. Not cold as most vending machines work, but he loaded the base with ice and that made “his” cokes have floating ice chips inside of the bottles. Yes! One day, he surprised me with an offer that I could not refuse. I saw him using his cash register every time we stopped. Push some buttons and out pops a drawer to put in some money or make change for a customer. It was interesting to say the least. The only other ones we saw were the ones at the local market check out counter. Type in the numbers and after a few on the list, hit one last key and out pops a paper roll with items and numbers on it. Jnaki When I gave him my money for the freezing cokes, he promptly put it in the cash register. Then, one day, he asked me if I wanted to push the buttons and make the drawer come out. That was a surprise. So, yes, I pushed the buttons, up popped the totals and the drawer for the money. A captive audience was always good for something. Then, on another day, he actually showed me to tap one key, hit another for registering the sale and then continue on for the next item, etc. He was teaching me to work a large cash register !!! After a few tries, and other days in the office, I was getting good at depositing my money into the cash register. He said that when I got to be a teenager, a job as a cashier at the market would be a great job with high salaries and some permanence. The cashier experience would be good for any job in any department store as a form of experience. As a teenager, that was the first thing I wrote on the notes section for skills. YRMV Thanks, Mr. M
My father also took me and friends to Riverside on Saturday nights, so many great memories. I liked Danny Galullo in the purple 888. Thanks....
I used to walk from the Willamansett area over the river into Holyoke. There was a Piels brewery I passed on the way. So many great beer brands from that area.
