Narrowly missed a blown up 12 blot posi when a broken ring gear bolt took a ride 'round the carrier. It left a cool chrome "worm" in raised relief on the cover. This thread inspired me. I'm going to get an artist dude I know to paint it a face. To be continued..

 

50+ years ago I had a simple “AMF” painted on the cover of my OT Chevelle. Easily seen due to my air shocks and M/T H-70’s on the rear.

 

Haha…I had a welded up 12 bolt in my Chevelle for a while that ended up spitting some parts through the cover eventually when it came apart. I just beat the torn spot down and welded it up after putting a posi carrier in it.

My wife and I used to almost freeze when we would see this old black and white 65 dodge Polara car following us on the coastal highway. At a quick glance, it had the requisite color pattern, but in the rear view mirror, it was a real CHP patrol car. So, of course we all slow down and start to think why he was behind us on Coast Highway heading south to Dana Point. It was behind us for several stop lights and then, in whoosh, zipped by us in a flash.

We got so used to this similar action on weekends as the traffic down coast highway was always starting to get packed by lunch time. so, if we were going to the local hamburger place called Duke’s Restaurant (where the current Ruby’s Automobile Diner is located,today) the straight away portion of the highway was right in front. The CHP liked Duke’s hamburger place. Duke was a well known local dentist from the very early days in South Laguna Beach. His hamburger place was well known by the local surfing community for large patties, great tasting cheeseburgers and large cut home made fries.

So, when we drove by at anytime of the day or weekend, we recognized one or another car owned by one of our friends. Whether it was coming to the surf coast from Laguna Beach south or coming home, the restaurant was the best one for the next 40 miles in any direction. The teenage Flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery was a regular here and 10 years later, our 327 powered sedan delivery was also recognized by our friends when it was parked out in front of the restaurant parking lot.

But, as we kept driving on PCH south or north, we always saw the local CHP pulling over various cars for some violation. One day, we saw a black and white dodge following us down the highway. We were going the normal speed and this black and white pulled up next to us, after causing some anxiety for a minute or two. what was different was, despite the black and white paint job, the spotlights, it was missing some other CHP items. In the rear view mirror, a quick glance showed a b/w Dodge.

Come to find out, it was an older teenager/20 something kid that bought a used CHP dodge car at a police auction and it had everything stripped out from a regular CHP car. So, no flashing lights inside.

We then got familiar with the sightings and we did see his version of a b/w car pulled over by the real CHP patrols. So, why? The teenager’s car looked like a CHP car as the kid painted a sign on the side that showed a wave or something to that effect. But, when anyone takes a glance, it looks like a real CHP door. So, there was that. the rear trunk had a set of letters saying something like, “like the view” or “take a good look…” etc. now, those letters, from far away + the b/w color made everyone think it was a real CHP patrol car.

The CHP could not write him a ticket, there was no reason other than a bothersome paint lettering and color. No law against that. so, they looked for other infractions, but it was like inspecting one of their own cars, which it actually was… only used without the official lettering and lights.


The topper was, he jacked up the rear end. And now, it gave off the stink bug look, whether it was intentional or not. The rear third member unit had a painted slogan like CHD instead of a CHP and the quick glance was obvious… A big laugh at that. You can imagine the meaning of the CHD, but it had a chuckle to go along with the overall look. YRMV

I had an off topic Plymouth that sat pretty low in the back wend, you really couldn't see the 8 3/4 very well, but the back end of the Traction bars was pretty prominent. I had pictures of the Plymouth logo of the bird holding the racing helmet affixed to the back of those traction bars. Every time I hit full throttle (with the 4 speed) and the traction bars lifted the rear of the car, Those logos were very clearly seen from the rear of the car. I should have taken more pictures when I was younger.

Like some of these, in the 50's it was popular to paint a "Finger" on the rearend in So Cal.

 

Old picture, my Olds-Pontiac 9.3 has a skull molded int the back. Has been there for over 4 decades.
