chevy II 153 four cylinder

  1. Probably about 50 years ago my good friends dad (who was into cars/racing) invited me to a party to meet one of his friends. It was Cliff Collins of "Harmon/Collins". We talked a while about 4 cylinder Chevy II engines and asked be to come by his shop. There were about 25 bare small block Chevy heads that had been modified to fit the Chevy II bolt pattern along with cast aluminum side plates to allow the push rods to pass outside of the block on their way to the rockers. If I remember they were the 327 FI heads. Apparently a rule change in the racing circuit had made them illegal to use. I always wondered what happened to those heads, they probably were recycled as scrap metal.

    here's shots of jersey suedes home made mounts
    motor wise yes the 151 heads fits and raises the compression ratio to that of what GM built the forklift/pump motors running on NG or propane with flat top pistons to 10.5 with dished to 9.2
    with lances car we used a stock marine grind cam sounds like a SB at idle yet sounds like it's a banger on acceleration

    This is pretty much the mount I was envisioning. Either retaining a factory type rubber part or solid mount.

    Blueprint engines figured out how to put an LS head onto a 3.0L.. wayy beyond anything traditional but cool none the less

    I have heard rumors its not really bolted on and not functional.
    Just a mock up.

    It's been a couple years now and we have nothing more .

    Personally I'd love to see it happen even in a industrial engine version so they have a larger sales market .

    If i ever get time I'm going to try messing with a cracked block and a aluminum SBC head to see how hard it really is.
    I know I'd need to braze or weld op a few cooling holes to take threads.
    Wish I could see a midget block that's been converter

    origin engines had that one 3.6 liters https://originengines.com/origin-engines-3-6l/ and nothing more since that shown, it would have been nice going by the chart inthe link ,4 bolt mains , roller cam,piston oiling jets turbo and non

    My Contact a PSI in IL that out fits engines for LP and dual fuel for industrial applications like forklifts and sweepers and such said there was some new China or similar import 4cylinder engine coming in that was like a GM but not made by GM . I was trying to get him to get me the details . They have exhaust and intkes tht will fit a alter head 3.0 mercruiser but my god the st

    Might be the same long block as this Origin engine . Not lot of Hp for that with 9.5-1 AND a turbo I notice but it is at a low RPM .

    That is precisely "traditional" just not "period correct". Don't let the words get in the way. :)

    that would be nice to know more about as the latter gm industrial/marine were all 8 port heads, some had efi with port injection for which gm had made a kit to use

    I have been trying to get my hands on a LW6 ( I think) propane 3.0 out of a Clark fork lift for a couple years a guy has sitting with a bad transmission
    With its 10.5 to one compression would be good with a cam , carbs and a header.

    the newer 3.0's have a small port 8 port head but in a boat are susposed to make the same power at the bigger 8 port head of the earlier 3.0 engines. likely a better vortec combustion chamber or something . I suspect the earlier head will make more power at higher RPM with mods but I do not know that. the earlier head has huge ports vs the new one but there rated about the same in a marine application.

    the LP or natural as engines are much lower in power BUT there rated at under 2000 RPM as i recall .

    I'm looking for a good 3.0 block to use all the parts from mine with a freeze cracked block .

    PSI out fitted the 3.0 for Yale , Hyster , Clark, Combi and other fork lifts as well as JLG boom lifts , Tennate sweepers and a lot of other industrial stuff . That said there no longer doing t GM 3 .0 for anything currently .
    All the manifold I ahe that are PSI brand made are the small later port type .

    Hyster and Yale also used the older 3.0 engine in lifts and had Empco LP fuel systems on them and the intake is often a nice single barrel piece that a 2bbl carb could easily be adapted .

    I have been thinking four Corvair single barrel Rochester carbs on one of these might work well. Four 90 degree elbows and a flange and you would have most of what is needed to make a manifold . I have a set of the carbs an it would fit the time line for here .

    These are all 3.0 GM manifold off a industrial application .
    The ones that look multcarb would have a aluminum plenum that bolts on that work go over the top of the valve cover .

    There all the smaller later 8 port type. I think a adapter flange could be used to work on the 2.5 heads fairly easy if not as is.

    The intakes do not have huge ports but I'd bet there better than a boat or a Chevy II ( MAYBE)

    IM hoping to get one on a 2.5 mercruiser engine on a run stand with a pair of rodchester 2bbls

    3.0 Liter - PSI Engines

    there is a low profile and high profile engine . both are only 8.5 -1
    The low profile intake is aluminum and of you look at it one could moll the tops of the manifold for two carbs and then cap off the center original spot.

    I'm trying to get my hands on one . there found on Clark fork lifts

    I have the high profile intake base - the top plenum. Ihave seen these on JLG boom lifts and other equipment . the exhaust is a lake style looking cast iron piece . Unfortunately it would dump the exhaust directly into the fire wall on most cars .
    would be great for rear engine something LOL

    The parts form PSI or a forklift dealer are expensive like over $1000 expensive.
    They import them in I'm told . From were who knows .

    i have found they don't respond well being over fueled 450 cfm tops run great on a single two barrel , as to the later small port heads ,gm doing so raised the port bottoms to help increase power with efi
    finding one there's several lift truck junk yards around atlanta that have been very helpful

    Would a 153 run with 2x Stromberg 97s or 2 Holley 94’s? Or will that be too much?

    I’ve got a Clifford manifold arriving Saturday and I’m considering one of the Vintage Speed or Offenhauser adapters for 2x 3 bolt intakes. I’ve always wanted to run multiple strombergs

    Properly jetted, probably. I have seen pictures of 2x2 setups. There are dual Weber intakes available but those are infinitely adjustable carbs. I'll be running two Zenith 1 barrels on mine. If I was planning 2 twos I'd really look into the old Harper progressive setups. Really involved but very cool. I've never seen anyone use the Harper split shaft concept on a 4 cylinder. The basic idea is to split the throttle shaft and run one side a primaries and one side as progressive secondaries. It requires some complicated linkage.

    I have a pair of 81s on mine. Runs pretty stout for a 4 cylinder.

    Wow! That is impressive. But I don't need anything else I can't work on. Just trying to make all my old crap hang on a few more years. :eek:

    I work for a GM dealer. The L3B has been in the trucks since 2020. It replaced the 4.3L and has more hp and torque than the 4.3L. Actually quite an engine really. We sell a ton of them. That said they really sound like garbage


    At one time I was very convinced to put Sniper on my 4cyl with a Brazilian turbo manifold and hang a T3 off of it, but I told myself no enough times that I’m just looking for old school cool

    Does anyone here know what roller rockers will fit? I have the 3.0L engine but think a 153 would be the same?

    base engine in the 1500's how many decades has gm used that china/ cherry made engine in the smaller suv's now?

    If your talking about the 1.5 equinox engine, came with the redesign in 2018. The trax and Trailblazer all have different engines between 1.2 and 1.4l

    standard 1.5 ratio gm SB rocker. part number 05723551. IMMO they would be a waste of money, motor only turns a tad over 5k before dropping power, and with limited valve covers available there not enough clearance for polly locks if used,

    I wasent sure on the Toyota fork lift for the 4cyl. I know they used the gm v6 in them I service a couple .
    PSI supplied the engines with there fuel system and manifolds oil pan .

    I was working on a 17,000 pound Yale today and it had a 350 vortec engine with a cast-iron 4BBL intake with a Rochester spread bore carb mount but was also drilled for a Holley pattern . Was on LP with PSI componets .

    I had never seen a cast iron intake for a vortec. I kind of wanted the manifold for a engine I have.

    The JLG Arial equipment uses this i have seen several boom lifts and I think a big scissor lift.

    I'd like to find the high compression natural gas one GM sold .

    I really want a 10-1 3.0 .
    Still looking for a good 3.0 block that's got a usable standard bore .
    I have a like new 3.0 with a cracked block I'd like swap the parts off of .

    In WI many have freeze cracks.
