Featured Customs What paint are you using?

  1. Lloyd paints 100 times more than me.
I’m just a hillbilly hack with a sense of humor and a couple hammers. Our last all over was 3 years ago. Hopefully it’s another 3 for the next one.
The crazy insane talent around here hardly post but when they do you kinda feel like never touching a car again :)
Ive got one slight advantage being an instructor: i get to keep up with changes and try a lot of different stuff.
Having a tight school budget means using the cheapest stuff out there that looks like the materials you real techs use at work.
Off brand primers, paints, sand papers……..
Do I buy a $70 roll of 3m or a $20 roll of knock off paper? A $100 gallon of filler or a $100 case with 4 gallon cans of filler?
So I get to use crap most of us here would be too scared to try. That’s why I post and talk about the stuff that works.

I havn't pro. painted since 2000,things have changed. I now live in Texas 100 miles to a paint store so it's onlinefor me. I have used speedkote it is ok I like nason not as good when Du Pont had it. In my opinon when the Du Pont's got woke they screwed it all up in the busines.

  3. I've adapted to my ways lol... my customer base doesn't have a $20k budget for their paint, wish they did, but i get pretty damn good results with my process and materials, can't imagine spending more money on materials for an equal outcome, just to say that I used a certain brand. And the price of a gallon of rage filler is just ridiculous. I use Evercoat with the blue stripes on the can, $30 a gallon, and regardless of what anybody says, sanding filler sucks, I don't care who made it. Don't bridge the gap with primer and it's all good lol... probably 10 shops here locally, guess I'm the only one that'll do an allover. But I'm a one man operation, I have serious trust issues when it comes to hiring or letting someone I don't know around my customers stuff. I'm a weirdo, with a shit attitude

  5. Tammy went to Orion for a while, they promised her the world, but in the end (after she built up that company) they renigged, so she left & created Revolt where her & her husband have complete control.

... and that's why we appreciate your posts. This group runs the gamut, from 'never wash it' to someone like @CTaulbert or @anothercarguy who build show winners in their garage.

I'd guess most of us that follow these threads fall in the 'better than spray cans' desire up to 'been out a while' and can learn from those exact things you are talking about. The current state, wide experience, tight budget, want decent quality, don't want to buy stuff just for the name or find out it's caca.
We know you'll drive it, it's whether you'd buy it!

  10. I used Tamco high-build primer on my Deuce frame & A body. Fairly inexpensive compared to others. First time ever holding a spray gun; it came out well & sanded pretty easily.

  11. Brother, if it weren’t for the current situation with my Mom, Chandler would be at Mt. Sterling high school, Tonya would be driving a school bus down there and I’d be a bigger pain in your ass than I am now. And be happier than a pig in shit! :D:p

A few buddies locally have been using American Icon with some pretty excellent results. They're definitely cheaper than some of the big brands. That being said, I don't know if they're so substantially cheaper than a more developed line that I would entertain using their stuff. Maybe for a solid color. But then I have to go buy all the reducers and catalysts instead of just using the HOK stuff I already have.

For clears I use Transtar clear. Painted lots of cars and parts with it, and always had good luck.

  19. Revolt has the same (or maybe better) quality as Tamco. It is Tammy's company after she moved on from the family business & has expanded to many other custom products.

A reminder for TAMCO users....Today is small business Saturday & they are having their 35% off sale today! A great time to stock up, I took advantage of this a couple years back & saved a bunch. I think I spent close to 2K & since I do not paint as much as I used to, don't really need anything this time.
