I'd be willing to take a chance that they would fit my Merc depending on the price. Im sure shipping will be killer. Would you be willing to sell only one? What would you want for them shipped to 38326?
I have found NEW drums from some of the aftermarket shops. Just not sure of the best way to remove the old drum from the hub.
Nice car... it'll buff out for starters. Once the brakes are squared away, put miles on it and it'll tell you what it wants. I.M.O., don't change stuff just to change stuff. Let the car tell you what it wants. Those Mercs are awesome cruisers!
You need to find a parts house that can do things like a press service, replace the swaged on drums, etc. Some Napa stores do such services.
Does anyone here know if the front hub and drum from a 63 Mercury Monterey will fit my 56 Monterey? They look identical. Found one on sleazebay cheap.
I found a guy in NY out on the island who had advertised a pair of drums back in 2022. He still has them and wants $500 for the pair plus shipping and will not separate (plus what ever a machine shop will charge to separate my hub from the old drum). That may be a good price if I was restoring my Merc, but for a few hundred more, I will just convert to power disc. and be done with it.
There's a reason he still has them. No way id give more than $75 a drum. There are guys disc brakes swapping literally scrapping those drums
I would take $100 plus shipping for what I have but you need to figure out whether they can work or not. I would guess since I have spindles, backing plates, etc., they should be able to work. But, I don’t know for sure. My parts are off a 55 Ford.
Sounds like the main difference between Ford and Mercury is the bolt pattern after talking to a friend of mine earlier that has a 55 Mercury. Mercury is 5 on 5 and Ford is 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
Redrilling drum and or hub would be easy enough. Or if he ended up swapping the rear leaving the small Ford pattern on front would make getting a rear end with matching pattern easy
One of the many sites Ive been researching said the Ford drums would not work on the Merc. I found a company that sells a new drum for the 56 Merc. A little pricy at 217 bucks but it is new and I only need the one.
Good deal. Glad you found one. I was just keeping these for spares for my 56, so no problem for me keeping mine.
Your buddy's Merc is really sweet! I plan on doing a two tone the same way to mind. Have not yet decided what color though. Just pulled the old radiator out in preparation for installing the new 4 row radiator I bought. Going to clean and paint the area before installing it though...I have several projects going on at once with my Merc. Trying to save the door panel upholstery. The backing is all rotted so Im taking off the original upholstery and reinstalling it on masonite board.
Replaced the old radiator with a 4 core for a 57 T Bird. Could not find one in 4 core for the Merc. Fit well with just some minor adjustments. Also got the engine compartment all cleaned up. Here's a few before and after shots.
Supposedly the 56 Merc came with a 312 engine. When I did some research, I found that no 312 engines came with a 2 bbl carb. Only '59 thru '60 offered 2 bbls. Mine has a 2bbl carb and intake. I really just wanted to replace the 2bbl with another one or possible run an adaptor plate with a small 4bbl. Does anyone have any knowledge of what 2bbl carb will mate up to my intake or what adaptor plate will match the stud pattern of my intake???
