Thanks Outback, ZerroHalfcup and AmishMike. The car will only be driven occasionally locally early in the mornings. I am primarily building it to use at TROG, RPM Nationals and other vintage drag events. Have been sick the past couple of weeks and traveling a lot for business pre-holidays so progress has been / will be a bit slow.
Thanks V8-m, Rick and Harald - really appreciate the support and encouraging words. Picked up the new windshield from the glass shop today. Fitting the glass tape and getting everything back together was a bit of a task but eventually it all came together. 2” total chop.
Little more progress - managed to get the headlight mounts bent and pretty close to where I want them - will need some fine tuning but I am missing some hardware for the headlight bolts so need to pick that up to figure out how far off I am on making the two sides reasonably symmetrical.
Looks great! Are you going to chop the top frame, too? I did the same 2” chop to mine. Now I’m scratching my head about how to chop the top.
Jeff34 - Thanks. I am probably going to leave it as a pure roadster and just run it without a top - the car won't get driven on long trips and I don't really like the look of the top in the down position.
@reffiesj I get that. I don't like that look either, but I'm old and the sun beating down on me gets tiring at times. Thanks for the reply! Great looking project. I love the striping. Is that beige?
Am I seeing this correctly, the grille shell is Nickle plated? That's a special touch that it seems most 28-29 rods overlook. It gives the rod a warm, vintage appearance. The wire wheels just nail the look. My favorite roadsters are yours and FlyinBrian's DeSoto hemi. You guys GET IT!
Osage orange - I can’t take credit for the grill shell - the car was an older restoration when I got it - at some point it was done to a very high level. Close up it has a bunch of patina now. Truthfully, it looks a bit better in the pics than in real life. Appreciate the kind words on the project!
Got the lights dialed in today. Need to replace the bulbs with 12V but am happy with the way they turned out.
Thanks Deutscher! Added a polished spreader bar from Millworks. I like the way it ties everything together.
Wow! This car is purely stunning and have enjoyed watching the progress. My apologies if you’ve already mentioned this, but are there any plans for a hood or are you gonna run without one?
I'm currently building some of the things they converted, like the 32 front axle and the reverse eye spring. I installed a 4-speed Volvo m40 gearbox, but the torque tube is retained. Greetings, Harald
Thanks Steves46 - I am planning to run a hood - I was originally thinking of using hidden pins and a floating hood look but am likely going to abandon that for traditional leather hood straps - I ordered up some leather belting and hardware and am waiting for them to arrive and then will decide on the approach to take. No side panels in either case. Harald - nice progress - was not aware of the Volvo gearbox conversion - am enjoying following your build thread.
A pair of Banger Roadsters I snapped at the recent 70th Anniversary celebration of the Four Ever Four Cylinder club meeting.
Thx for sharing the pics 29Sleeper - looking forward to getting my car out there! Dropped the headlight mounts and license plate / tail light bracket off at the powder coater, installed the new wiring harness and confirmed everything is working as it should. Also started to play around with some hoodstrap options - which color do folks think works better?
I like the first, but either work. I have also seen straps from a loop at the bottom of the bonnet to the chassis - so 4 shorter straps rather than 2 over the top...
I had over the top straps for a bit on my T… and it was nothin but scuffed paint and curled up leather. Went to 4 straps and never looked back. Many A bones with stock top panels mount 4 straps to the lower hinge rods. I run a full hood so made some surface mounts
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I was leaning towards the color in the first pics myself. I probably should have clarified in the original post that I just threw the strap over the hood for convenience of taking the pics - am planning to run four short straps from the lower hinge rods as suggested by Kevin above.
Thanks Retson! Picked up the headlight mounts from the powder coater and wired up the headlights. Also started on the hood straps and latches - realized I am short on hardware so need to order some more before I can make more progress.
