  6. No we can't agree ~ The first production fiberglass car body, the Glasspar G2, was created in 1949 by Bill Tritt, making it the starting point for widespread fiberglass body production in automobiles; this car was based on a Willys Jeep chassis and was considered a Hot Rod.

So,.... This subject has continued to cause "a disturbance in the force" off and on for the last 50 years,.
And I believe it's a stupid and divisive waste of time..... Frankly I couldn't care less if your Hot Rod started out as a genuine steel body, or was built out of cray-paper and dog poo..

I have walked up on many fine examples of really Traditional style Hot Rods that have been built with fiberglass bodies,... And have walked past tons of original steal bodied "Street Rods" simply because they didn't interest me... And don't forget, All the smoothed out modifications that can be found as standard equipment today on fiberglass bodies,... Was usually originally pioneered on a modified steal body car!
(you know, like the original steal bodied cars I would just walk right past).

So,.. Here's a hypothetical question for you, If quality fiberglass bodies (like the ones we can buy today) were available back in the early days of Hot Rodding at a much lower price than original steal bodies (that usually needed work, and were prone to rusting),........ Would the pioneers of Hot Rodding use them ?..

A lot of you hate hidden hinges and deleted cowl vent (etc.)... Lets consider the Bob McGee Roadster, First ever cover shot for Hot Rod Magazine in 1948... Go ahead and look for the door hinges on that car.... Son of a gun !.... That cant be a real Hot Rod !...

It's been my experience, that most the guys that cry about Glass vs Steal, Are the guys that have the 48' Hudson four doors,.. And the aforementioned "Street Rods"..... Most Real Hot Rod guys I know are more about the look and execution of a Hot Rod build,. Then WHAT the body is made out of....

But just to belabor the point,... So, I'm thinking "Exactly what percentage of your original steal body is original?",.... After all, we should deduct for patch panels, weld, body filler, wood, glass, window regulators, inner and outer door handles, glass run parts, wind lace, seals, cat whisker,..... Possibly, sub rails, firewall, seat frame, upholstery, floors and just about anything else you could find in a Bob Drake or Dennis Carpenter Catalog... Because if your honest about "What percentage of your Original Steal car is actually ORIGINAL"... It will give the snobs with a higher percentage a opportunity to look down on your Hot Rod....

( I have a 78% All original body,.... Unlike that poor schmuck with a 67% original body !.... Thus ! I have the superior Hot Rod!..... *resounding applause*)

Was this post a bit absurd ???? ..... YUP!.... but IMHO, no more absurd than Real Hot Rodders getting they're panties in a bunch over WHAT material a Hot Rod is made of.

    Ya'all have a nice day

I have a "32" fiberglass roadster. I have no problems with a glass car. Not everyone can get their hands on steel, so they settle for glass or perhaps they prefer glass...whatever.

Now tell me how you other glass body owners handle this question. My glass car was bought and built in 2002. I really struggle when a casual admirer asks, "what year is it?" I feel like an idiot or a liar if I say 1932. Or do I go into a spiel about it being a 1932 fiberglass replica?

  18. If the casual observer ask what it is and seems to be genuinely interested I am all to happy to tell them it's a '32 Ford Roadster, I can leave it at that or go into construction if they ask the questions, if they seem to be a smart arse I tell them it's a dune buggy!

I was privy to a conversation to a guy pumping gas and from the other side of the pump the first question he ask is the steel or glass, I replied it's glass, I replied.

Next thing out of his mouth is "I wouldn't have a glass car even if it was give to me",, I looked around the pump to see he was putting gas in a moped.

What amazes me is the arrogant attitude some people have. HRP

it's a product of evolution... once women started in the work force... as in doing a mans job...more and more women seen the extra money those folks had, and more and more went to work, this was back in the 60's. a ol timer told me that this was gonna be thefall of the family unit,... one of the main structures of america... the american.... as time went ... wages balanced down to were both had to work to make it...which made it to where kids were raised by baby sitters.... mom and dad got home late and they hardley ever sat at the dinner table together... most the time mom would call them.. you want taco bell...so now the kids are in the wonder years.... get out of school at 1:30, and are free to roam till 6 or so... during that time they run their mouth... be disrespectful.. steal, take drugs, basic hoodlums... where as back in the day geting out of line got you a back hand...then there s the internet..... wow weee... people think they are free to say what ever they want.... do every thing they do to get under peoples skin.... for what.... more likes??? WTF....
