    Hello,

One of our favorite things to do on dates as teenagers was to drive up the coast to the Palos Verdes area, starting in San Pedro and moving all around the coastline ending up in Torrance. It was something that a lot of Long Beach teenagers did not do on a monthly basis. But, for the more adventurous, this was new ground.

It impressed our dates because of the far away knowledge that no one they knew had or thought about. Driving along the coast was just something surfers did in their search for waves. It also provided a cool scouting trip to find those cool spots for checking out the secluded views and talk about the legendary, “Submarine Races.”

The locals obviously knew the area, but for us in the far away cities, it was a trip to see new sights and places. Besides the Wayfarer’s Chapel high on a hill overlooking the blue Pacific, one place that always impressed the dates was the old Parasol Restaurant. There wasn’t anything like that in Long Beach for us. It was a brightly colored interior with nice booths that squeaked when sliding over.

But, all was not lost locally in our cruising grounds.

The Parasol Restaurant in Seal Beach is a restaurant that looks like its name. In recent years, there were two Parasol's remaining in the area. However, Dinah's Parasol in Torrance was demolished in the last past couple of years.

The Parasol Restaurant in Seal Beach, CA is one of the last remaining examples of a roadside theme called programmatic architecture. (novelty architecture) Built during the space age era, the Parasol is the sole remaining survivor of the Parasol restaurants, with the demise of the Dinah's Parasol in Torrance in the late 1990's.

Over the years, the 40 Ford Sedan Delivery (flathead + 327 powered) could be seen on Friday/Saturday nights in the various parking lots on our road trips north or stopping for a late dinner on the late evening drives coming from San Diego or Camp Pendleton. YRMV

Prior to the surf adventure days/nights, the stop overs at the Parasol in Torrance or Seal Beach were definite stop overs due to the ambience and of course, the great food. And, of course, the interior surroundings found no where else. Hot rod cruising in different areas of So Cal expanded our horizons…

    NOTE:

The Parasol Restaurant located in Rossmoor near Seal Beach first opened in 1967 and was subsequently made famous in the 1973 classic movie American Graffiti. More recently, the familiar pink and white umbrella structure was an icon in the Seal Beach area.

Plus, the Seal Beach restaurant was just across the freeway from the “secret” location of the famed “Westminster Avenue Drags…” running across the U.S. Navy property.

Coming off the island in the fog or rain during low tide driving as take bed 2-1/2 ton loaded was not pleasant down up the steel grates in traffic like shown…. You had to plan ahead to have space in front of you not to stop on the incline……sliding back with no traction was scary ……
