I've had this happen twice. Both times wearing safety glasses. Getting your eyeball drilled and scalpeled isn't super fun. I've found throwing on a hoodie, with a full face shield works pretty good. Haven't had an incident since.

Yeah, I got lucky and the Dr has an appointment this morning over by the mall. I ordered a full face shield last night that is anti fog, it will be here tomorrow. Glasses stop a lot of damage but not all, especially if you put your ear muffs on, they seem to pinch the glasses away from from my face and make it worse. Ear plugs or better yet, noise cancelling ear buds are a better way to go and you can wear them under the shield. Live and learn man, live and learn.

Thank you. I aim to please.

My allergies have been acting up all season (winter???). I know what is going to happen tomorrow, that face guard will show up on my porch, I will fire up the compressor, put on the face mask, start to grind and sneeze my brains out all over the inside of it. It will be in the trash can by mid day.

I forgot about that! Thanks man!
I got a new face shield tonight from Amazon and my Dr gave me a pair of glasses they wear during procedures. They have great side protection but I doubt they are rated foe garage use.

"eye am what eye am"...that was good stuff.:p:D

New face shield. Works great. I tried to figure it up, won’t do it. Cool beans

    Major Tom to ground control.
I got back to work on smoothing the cast iron block in back. It was pretty rough and ugly. Looks good now. For the deep gouges I applied JB Weld. I didn’t thing mondo would hold up to the heat.
    IMG_6805.jpeg
And I tossed the bell housing in my blast cabinet and removed the paint then ground down the casting

    IMG_6804.jpeg
i called my chrome dude and he wants $350 to plate it. If it was 200 I might but I think it will look cool in metal flake.

The JB takes a while to set up so I’ll sand it down tomorrow and move to the front of the Flathead. Clean up the water pump castings and the block.

I still need to pick out the paint color. I was going to go Pagan gold but it clashed with the tan firewall. I’m thinking a candy apple will look good with the maroon body, use some decent flakes and clear coat it.

The transmission shop is replacing 2nd and 3rd and the synchros and plastic bits. We found a funny witness mark in the end of the crank that is likely from the crank shaft moving back under thrust and making contact with the input shaft. That would explain a couple of issues during power shifting I am having.

The trans guys are bobbing the end of the shaft and polishing it. It too has a small shiny spot.

hopefully I have the engine painted before the trans comes home. I am planning on leaving it natural and polishing the ribs and the bottom.

By spring it will run better and look better.

  10. No metallic or metalflake....... that would clash with the tasteful color combination you have now.

Why don't you stay with your cool combo brown and cream? I know this desire to add more to what already exists but overall consistency is so essential...
    (no offense, just my opinion)

  12. That car already makes its own statement when people first see it. In this case and for this part I think less is more (what you had works well). To much moves it into the Gold Chain class of the late 80's. Don't go there, leave the Metal Flake in the bottle.

  16. Somebody please Photo shop Candy Pagan Gold metalflake to the Block side and intake flange on the block so we can put this to rest. If I like it I'll admit it and go back upder my Rock.

FWIW I agree with you, that it looks great as is! I think the idea of candy pagan gold block would be like overdone makeup on a beutiful woman, lack of class.

  19. If you deem a change is in order, chrome the block....you know you want to.:)

I ran it past him. He said no to the gold, due to the tan firewall. But metal flake maroon? He liked it.

If it was apart I just may. My chrome plated a few 327's last year and they turned out awesome! I tried to buy one of the them but they were already spoken for.

Dave Stuckey painted the engines on all of his cars gold. When I asked him why he did that he said " because I want my cars to have a heart of gold". Honestly on your car there is so little of it that shows. why not just go ahead and do it. A couple of well placed gold pinstripes on the firewall are all it would take to pull it together.... no guts, no glory

I had always heard that if you chrome plated an engine block that is would hold in heat if you tried to run it. I have seen it on ISCA show cars but never on a street driven car. Does anyone know for sure???

As long as you don't chrome the inside it'll be fine. :D Seriously, the block and heads give up so little heat externally that it'll make almost no difference. The cooling system will do all the real work.

Like this? I think it needs a couple more belts. I feel sorry for the bell housing. Perhaps they ran out of chrome? The mill from the Grasshopper. There is a video of it running but whos to say what it will look like with 5000 miles on it.

  30. I had a very good friend in the early 70's with a Blown Flathead in a Model A Roadster with a 6 belt system on it. I watched him kick them off all at once right at shift point. Damn that was Krazzy Shit! Can you imagine what 8 of them doing that would look like? I remember Douge laughing about it and opening his trunk and saying, "that's why I carry a full set of spares." He wasn't afraid to lean on his stuff. I sure miss him.
