I like the idea! I understand the land speed influence, as the SCTA definition of a "rear engine modified roadster" is: "The driver's seat shall be entirely in front of the engine. The entire engine shall be forward of the centerline of the rear axle. The drivers line of sight shall be over the bodywork. Streamlining ahead of and including the cowl and channeling is permitted" What is the judging criteria for the AMBR beyond the obvious requirement of beauty?
If you are using a side shift trans, buckled directly to the rearend, it will get very tight. Don Waite didn't use a trans, and look where he sits in the car. I did this belly tank 3 years ago, you run out of room in a hurry. Good luck with your project .
One thing to consider is moving rear axle centre line 2-3 inches back, this was common on Rear Modified roadsters
Just wondering, SCTA rules state that the body must face the original direction as manufactures, does AMBR have the same rule? Some gifted artist here could draw up some concepts with the body swapped 180 degrees.
I've been gathering parts for the past couple months. I did manage to make the parts for the tail panel. The center will be a tail light, the exhaust will pass through the other 4 openings
It's been done. 26/27 Roadster. Whole car was flipped around except for the drivetrain and suspension. If I remember right it went faster Backwards.
Here's a photo. I believe it was outlawed the next year. Not sure it would be a AMBR contender with out a butt load of work. Mick
So, I am sure you call them tissues and not Kleenex, must you say reciprocating saw not Sawzall, and when you cut yourself, you say self-adhesive bandage and not Band-Aid, as Kleenex, Sawzall, and Band-Aid are all brand names. Yes, we know they are technically mid-engine, but when someone says they are building a rear engine car you know what they are talking about.
Nah. As an actual Automotive Engineer, now retired, I will stick with the correct term that has been established by the industry that makes it possible for you to be wrong.
Why all this bickering over rear vs. mid engine? I'm pretty sure anyone here with half a brain knew he wasn't hanging that SBC out behind the rear axle. I personally would love to just watch this build without all the negative commentary detracting from the project thread.
Not sure if your design is locked in yet, but a v-drive rescued from an old boat might work for reducing the center length of the drivetrain.
No bickering. Everyone here enjoys the same freedom and liberty to be as wrong as they want to be. It's their right.
I have 100 pls pictures from the Carrillo Roadster restoration. The sprint car in / out box barely fit between the flathead and the quick change. I’ll be happy to provide you with any pictures you might want to see. For now, this gives you a good idea of the lack of room
