Bought three new chrome 97's from Hotrodnomader. Very helpful, great price, too.

Based on actual experience, both Uncle Max and the Genuine Strombergs is the way to go.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, but for my money a big part of the enjoyment of any hobby is the hunt for, finding, disassembling, take a peak at the innards, repairing, looking at the craftsmanship of vintage parts, materials and design etc etc. "Ya can't polish a turd" comes to mind after reading that carb shop review. F' that.

I have an Offy dual carb intake on my Flattie. I bought 2 9Super7s from Speedway for it. Right off the bat, one of them had a malfunctioning needle and seat. I ordered another one and ran those 2 carbs for about 9 months and 2500 miles. In that time both of them also had the needle and seat fail, both times lead to my windshield being doused with gasoline. We do have ethanol fuels in this area, so that may have been the problem. I rebuilt them with genuine Stromberg parts, which all fit and did not have issues after that. But at that point I had as much money in them as buying the real Stromberg carbs from Summit Racing or any other reseller. I have since replaced them with the Big 97s from Stromberg. The difference in the quality is night and day. Every piece is much nicer, stronger, tighter, etc. I could not recommend the Speedway carbs to anyone. If you put the new Strombergs next to the Speedway carbs, the quality difference is immediately apparent. The linkages, castings, are are much much nicer on the real ones.

Don't know him and no disrespect, just that a lot of 8-10 year old threads get picked up sending users chasing ghosts.

By the way Mark, Charlie Price's Vintage Speed in Vero Beach sells a repop 97. He tests each one before shipping and guarantees. He also sells every conceivable linkage part for the 97s.

Don’t apologize, I’ll take any opportunity to espouse about Uncle Max. I’ve sent carbs to him for probably fifteen years now. Just got a quartet back about six months ago for my Dad’s coupe.
