Yes you have the freedom to comment. But it adds zip to the topic, and if anything detracts from it. How about not nitpicking and just watch the thread if you don't have something positive to add to it?
It's center steer, so the divider bar would be in my line of vision. May make a brooklands style windscreen
Why not refer to it as a "misplaced engine" and drop the subject. This is a post about a cool project....not about automotive dialogue. Keep us up to date on your progress!!!
Or something a little racier if we are building his car in our mind...Radius the front edge of the cockpit to follow the rounded windshield. But I am thinking he has a plan of his own and we will all impatiently wait for the results
I may have missed it but did anyone mention Cotton Werksman from Ill? He built one back in the 70's that the build was followed in I believe Rod & Custom? I think he had a Hemi or maybe an Ardun flathead in his. Been a long time, memory not so good.
I had a chance to get a reverse rotation SBC out of a boat awhile back and was envisioning running a transmission or short drive line under or over the rear end flipped around with a off set diff for clearance into a gear box made to hold a set of quick change gears with one gear connected to the back ward diff . kind of like a V drive boat .. Likely a stupid idea but I was thinking hmmmmmmm Looking forward to seeing how this project goes . I always liked the back engine drag cars like this .
No need for reverse rotation powertrain, save for the novelty. Winters makes a quick change with the ring gear on the other side, and gears cut the other way. It's intended to be in the front of an AWD car. I have on in the rear of my mid-engine A, with the engine in backwards. GN axle tubes can be had at up to 48" in uncut length, and axle shafts can be had off-the-shelf to go farther than this if you want.
My thoughts were to get the transmission out put over or under the rear end to move the engine back . So I'd need a set of gears or chain to connect to the pinion shaft That said i have not really thought it through much. I don't want to muddy up this thread with my half ass idea.
V-drives might work, they also make a Z drive that goes in the front top or bottom and comes out the rear opposite shaft bottom or top depending on need. If he needs measurements on a v-drive, I have a top loader Casale box (12 degree vintage box from the early 60s) and a modern Casale (10 and 12 degree drives).
This build makes me think of one of the Oilers cars. Don't know the owner but I remember seeing this car in a few photos over the years.
Just found this thread - if it turns out anything like your coupe, this is gonna be a treat to watch!
Regarding the no suspension deal at Bonneville, that's how I've been running lately. No engineering is better than bad engineering. Flathead powered tank, unblown on gas. 190 in October. Back to your previously scheduled programming.
I like the entire concept, regardless of semantics, but where do you plan on putting golf clubs? Maybe offset the engine to the right (always lean toward the right) and the sticks can fit behind the driver? Beers will have to go up front.
Yes. The proper designation does not take into account the direction of the powertrain. It's not front wheel drive (it's AWD), and I don't drive it backwards.
