I have a rear mounted (technically a mid/rear engine, by our Laws) and I have the engine facing the rear with an auto trans behind it (toward the driver) coupled to a 4x4 transfer case that I use the front output shaft to drive the tail shaft down the side of the engine to the offset diff. The diff centre is flipped to give 6 forward speeds. The harmonic balancer is almost above the diff housing. This allows the trans and transfer to take up less room at the front and effectively shortens the whole driveline, whilst still allowing a 5 bar rear end with coil springs. None of it is HAMB friendly so no photos.
Looking forward to progress on this car. If we could get the people who like to argue on someone's build thread to be quiet and let the builder show his stuff, that would be great. Build on fine sir.
As far as the problem having the mill occupy the same space as the drivers' kidneys; 55Willys had some good ideas awhile back; https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ . & it'd allow the driver/passenger to be in a bit more "normal" position. Is not the shaft spacing smaller on the A-V8 QC? Or, I suppose a homemade QC would be appropriate, then you could match the shaft- centerlines to what you wanted/needed. ??? IDK, but was thinking if time-limited parts are required, *if* spacing works, a T86OD or maybe a T85OD might be useful, as they are rather short boxes. I can see where the strength of a T86 might be in question, but T85 should be near overkill(hope I got those designations correct here). Could go w/irs in a swingaxle format - wouldn't be the 1st lakes/bonnie racer to do so, nor even the 1st streetster from the past, either. Might protrude from the trunk panel, idk? Marcus...
I’ve seen this picture before on a V8 Corvair site. Big block, short case power glide, Quick change chunk
I'm thinking that the Kentz & Leslie truck runs a side shift trans behind the flathead connected to a banjo center section with what may be more swing arm than independent rear suspension. Still the engine, trans and rear are pretty well short coupled. Still that would work with a quick change in the setup you are thinking of. If it is a tube frame the torsion bars could be run inside the rear frame rails to clean things up a lot. That engineering has already been done for front torsion bar hot rod suspension. From what I can see it uses torsion bar on the frame rails for rear suspension. I didn't get any photos from the rear to show what it had for a rear end though.
In my Tank I'm running a C-4 with a shortened tailshaft and a Greek coupler into a Cyclone quickchange. It measures 34 1/2" from the back of an 8BA to the centerline of the rear axle. This would require swing axle or something. Just offering up an option. Wayno
Are there any more details or concept drawings you can share, about the direction you are headed with this? I'm curious to see what you have planned for the front end body panels. In a previous post, you mention the concept of using the engine block as a structural component, can you give more detail on your plan?
Why? In an all out BS slinging competition you’d end up so deep in your own spouting that you’d barely be able to breathe. No competition from here
So IF that SBC had a electric water pump the area above the dampener could be about 4" or so shorter run the alternator off the drive shaft/ coupler . that lets the seat back move back a little. as taboo as is it is here a V6 would give another 4" . Or my idea years back was a V four made from a v8 that would gain about 8" or more on a SBC . V4 midget engines made about 300 HP . so 200 on gas would be doable . Mini blower maybe more . move the wheels back say 3" also V-4 Cylinder Chevrolet Wilson - Museum of American Speed
Maybe 15 yrs ago here there was pictures of an IRS using entirely early Ford Parts, wouldn't have a clue who built it, but it was a work of art.
PG is only 27" and shortened ones are 9.5" less so probably way to go. Cotton's T had no transmission.
"Cotton's T had no transmission." Since when, & which one? Yellow Ardun used a '40 ford box w/zepher(?) gears; iirc, mid-engined blown hemi used a shortened 'flite. Marcus...
Not the one I had in mind & neither is this but interesting https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/check-out-my-rear-end.345138/#post-3729333
