I've looked and cannot find mention of anyone putting a 351 W in a '48 Merc. I've seen stuff where they've been in competition cars, but not in road cars. Aside from the front sump pan problem, I'm not seeing anything else major. The dimensions are within an inch of each other. I've got a '48 Merc four door that I had planned to put an SBC in because I've got one rebuilt on the stand. I've also got an OT mid 90s F150 with a good 351 and an M50D tranny. The truck is going to need lots of body work and a paint job, as well as new brakes and rear end. Is the 351 in the '48 a good idea, or am I just screwing the pooch?
Chassis Engineering (CE) had motor mounts for that conversion. You can check with Heidts which took over when they closed.
My 48 Ford sedan, with a 351w from an Aussie 90 f150, using the f truck oil pan and a c4 trans. Made Hurst style mounts to utilise the flathead mounting points.
Thanks, it fits in there really nicely. Trans slots into the X frame without any cutting, Oil pan clears everything.
I'll add that the C4 behind the 351W fit the X member okay, but when I decided to install an auto overdrive, I had to do some renovations to the member for clearance.
90's pickup oil pan is rear sump. Of course, it is still front pump, so the pan is fairly deep all around.
Here's a comparison from a chart posted by @flamedabone some time ago. Only thing I see that is off is the flathead starter is on the right. Aside from that, they're pretty darn close. I don't see any reason to modify the firewall.
I put a small slice in the toeboard to firewall joint, sideways. My engine/trans is slightly low in the chassis, as that's the way the previous project starter did it. If it was mounted higher, probably have to come up on the toe/firewall a little bit.
