  1. I can give them a quick shave to flatten them out while I’m waiting for valve guides

Back when we could buy chunky gas! :D
Most surface cutters/grinders will leave a good surface for gaskets, but if you want to go the extra mile, select the head gaskets first and find out what surface finish they prefer.
    Example
    https://www.jegs.com/i/Cometic-Gaskets/245/C5211-045/10002/-1
"A surface finish of 50 RA (roughness average) or finer is recommended for proper gasket seal"

  3. Haha! Basically I finish everything cast iron to one finish. Hasn’t caused me a problem yet but you’re not wrong. I’m picking away at this thing as I can afford it. The crank should be done soon. The bearings are on the way, I’m going to make a call tomorrow to get the guides and exhaust valves coming. This way the heads will be done. I can then move on to the block, I can deck it and hopefully pistons will be soon to do the boring and honing.

If you were close, I could CNC machine those heads to erase that damage.

Unless it were a 354. In which case I just have a stack of good heads.

  5. It is a 354, I’ll just knock down any sharp spots. Not overly concerned about that.

I’ve owned for awhile, thought I would get at it , it’s complete in a storage yard. I race Bville with a 354 and thought I could use another. Don’t know condition of motor , never got that far.

  15. Well these heads are determined to fight me, all was going well, until it wasn’t. IMG_5835.jpeg IMG_5837.jpeg IMG_5836.jpeg
Got the first head set up in the surfacer, took 0.003” off and it cleaned up nicely, decided to take one more cut and at the very end of the head the table moved and a cutter caught the head and made a decent mess. I think it would probably be ok but I didn’t bother to take any pictures of it as I left in disgust with myself. Also broke two cutters so need to replace those as well. Not a good day.

The table on the surfacer just rides on rollers, I think I moved it to far to the one side and it kicked the end up. Rookie mistake

Awww man, that sucks. Some days are diamonds........... and some not so much.:(

  19. Yeah, it’s the very end of the gasket surface, I think it would probably be ok anyways. I may have a line on another set of heads, @hemiracer is checking into some, and I know a guy in Edmonton may have some.

    Can’t like that. :(

  25. Oh like away, I was too mad yesterday to look, the chunk missing at the end is by a head bolt hole. It will be perfectly fine, once I replace all the cutters on our surfacer I’ll skim a thou or two off to get rid of the other scratches.

The truck 2 x 1 intake with weird carbs would be pretty cool, cleaned up:
It would also fit (cover) the tall water ports in the head.

Om thehemi.com a guy started putting two 2GC carbs on one of those using 1 to 2 bl adaptors, his wife got sick & never posted if he ever finished the project.

    JB weld, not JB Quick.

Fill up the grooves, and the shave it flat with a utility knife blade.

It will seal just fine. No need to cut it more.

  30. Oh yeah it would be fine, they look worse in the picture than they are. I bet 0.001” cleans it up. Just pisses me off.
