Bill, Wow! I'd have been shining a laser through the holes to get a point of origin. Hope you find the bullet, too. You're doing it the right way being cool, but, man. That's a freaking bullet through your building.

Wow Bill I’m so sorry your and Laura’s luck has sucked. I thought 23 and 24 sucked for me but it seems you had it a little worse. My thoughts and prayers go out for the 2 of you.

The bullet thing would be very disturbing and frustrating, but maybe you are looking at 2024 a little wrong.
I know what you and Laura have gone through with this year's health issues. It was 2020 for my wife, mixed right in with the absolute joys of Covid. It was a very trying time, and still is as the treatment is ongoing, but things look good so far. I look at 2020 not as the year my wife got sick, but as the year she survived cancer, and every minute since has been a blessing. I get to start another trip around the sun with her.
Happy New Year to you both. Live your best life and make every second count.
Keep paddling man. If you did the hood once, you can do it again.:)

  4. Bill. I am truly sorry this has happened when other things have been less then comfortable for you. Remember, what does not kill you only makes you stronger. Very best wishes for you and your family in the new year. The HAMB is a better place with you here.

In the immortal words of Arlo Guthrie:
"During these hard days and hard weeks, everybody always
has it bad once in a while. You know, you have a bad time of
it, and you always have a friend who says "Hey man, you
ain't got it that bad. Look at that guy." And you at that
guy, and he's got it worse than you. And it makes you feel
better that there's somebody that's got it worse than you.

But think of the last guy. For one minute, think of the last
guy. Nobody's got it worse than that guy. Nobody in the
whole world. That guy...he's so alone in the world that he
doesn't even have a street to lay in for a truck to run him over.
He's out there with nothin'. Nothin's happenin' for that cat."

I would be on the phone to the cops reporting gunshot vandalism in seconds after finding that.

Lost a neighbor kid the same age as me when I was 11 to carelessness with a gun. He was shot out of a tree by a careless / irresponsible hunter.

I have zero tolerance for firearm abuse.

Sorry that happened Bill but I’m sure you are thankful that it was just sheet metal and not someone you love. I can understand the frustration though all the same. Seems about how my year has gone too.

I warned ya man!! And if you don't start paying me, I'll be back!! :p just a suitable ending to a shit year brother. Sometimes I just throw my arms in the air, scream "FUCK!" at the top of my lungs, then laugh.... until I cry.... and then I punch the wall, and shake it off. It'll get better my friend.

I read your story and looked at the pictures but just couldn't hit the like button. When we discussed transporting a few weeks ago, you had mentioned your other issues that you were involved with, I can now understand. That hood and siding damage is way down the list, next year will be better.

  15. Damn that really blows. Glad we crossed paths earlier this year when you dropped off my rig, you'll be alright in a bit once this passes. We are in our new digs since we last crossed paths. Chin up for 2025!

Sorry for your bad luck . Thankfully no one was injured or killed. The barn east of my house has 3 .22 bullet holes in it . One wheat truck has 2 dents in the steel bed sides . Had the bullet been 2’ further west it would have gone through the radiator on a tractor. The neighbor kid a 1/4 mile away got a new .22 for Christmas and was trying it out . Talked to his Grandpa and the kid lost shooting privileges for 6 months.

Hi Bill, What the hell, you certainly don't need that this year. What is wrong with people? I have guns and have no problem with hunting but some should not have a squirt gun. I agree with the guys who mention trying to trace direction just so you know the general direction. If you haven't yet I would also suggest the report to the police, if nothing else it might be required later for insurance or legal issues. As mentioned at least no one was hurt, we both know cars can be fixed but people are much more difficult. All the best my friend and I sincerely hope 25 is a better year. Ron

  20. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Thank you all so very much for the comments/support/comedy. I cannot possibly return each & every one, but I read them all & appreciate them all. I woke up with a Positive attitude this morning at the prospects of a new & better year!

I would have already slid the dowel rod through the holes but it was raining cats & dogs yesterday. I had not moved the hood other than to lean it forward to inspect & photo the holes. I did NOT find the slug, I will keep looking but it is doubtful, because I don't know exactly when it happened since the hood was covered in plastic. I have swept the floor many times during the year & routinely have leaves blow in when the door is open.

I actually "Laughed Out Loud" when reading the handful of funny comments & definitely needed that! For those of the group that know me personally know many (but not all) of the other bad things that happened to me/us in '24. A couple life changing & a couple almost life altering, none for the better. Finding this damage was a fitting sh1t end to a sh1t year!

I am NOT a "call the cops/dial 911" type guy & no report will ever be filed. Not anti-cop, but I don 't want them anywhere near here unless I have to call them to "clean up" afterwards when (God Forbid) something bad happens. I may take a couple more pictures outside to show everyone the limited places it could have come from (Not Many)

On a positive note.....Since we have this OT section now, I will have to go through my pictures & do a Build Thread for this 67 TORO sometime in the near future.

    God Bless Everyone
    Bill

Completely understand not reporting, when you live in the sticks it's TCB yourself. There was a news story about how the LA POLICE handled a call recently that drives this point home.
I'd be doing the dowel just for knowledge, as you said, no idea when it happened. I'd also check the other buildings and fences to see if they also got damaged.

    • Treat all guns as if they are loaded.

    • Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

    • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

    • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
BTW, it's the 1st. Happy New Year!

I got to thinking about this when I was out feeding animals last night. I hear shots regularly all around me so need to be thankful I have never had similar. I have thought about it, but have likely become too used to it.

Happy New Year Bill! Praying for a better year.

Sorry you got the hood messed up. Yep, last year wasn't the best year for a lot of reasons. I had a somewhat similar incident.......of my own making. Wife started putting food out for the wildlife and we ended up with deer, raccoons, possums, skunks, and several ground hogs. The raccoons broke into the attic and I had to repair the vent and put a guard over it. A groundhog made a home under our back porch. Finally borrowed a trap and was able to catch him and release him in a local park. Shortly, we got another groundhog under the porch. Borrowed the trap again and was able to catch and release him as well. Soon, a 3rd groundhog took refuge under the porch. Bought my own trap........caught him but he got out of the trap. After that, no matter what I put in the trap to entice him, he'd walk right by it and go under the porch.
After about a month, I gave up and decided the only option was to shoot him. Didn't want to, but he was outsmarting me and I was looking bad to the wifey. So I sat a pistol on the kitchen table so it would be handy. Caught him sitting up and facing away from the house just a couple feet from the porch and right behind the dining room door. Slowly I got the gun and eased the door slightly open. Couldn't get a good line of sight though, and had to crook my hand around the slightly open door.

    BANG!

I freakin missed him DANG IT !

He spun around and took off sideways toward the opening in the porch. My kneejerk reaction was to pan the gun to the left and fire again. This all happened in a split second. I quickly pulled the trigger again as I panned to the left.

BANG AGAIN ! and DANG AGAIN.

Didn't get the ground hog but I killed one of my wife's large and favorite flower pots. Put a hole all the way thru the sucker.

She has a pair of them and I can't find another one so far.

Anyway, I know this doesn't compare to the ruined hood, but thought maybe it would give you a good laugh to start the New Year and realize that as bad as it was, at least it didn't hit you or a family member. So I wish you a much better and a Happier New Year.:)

Bill I hope and pray that 2025 is better for the two of you. A bullet hole in the building and hood sucks but could’ve been much worse as stated above.
About 45 years ago a friend and myself were involved in a self inflicted gun related mishap. My friend recently purchased a new magnum handgun and also a mid 70s Cutlass. Off we go in his new car with new gun to sight it in at our favorite gun shooting area. He decides to rest gun on roof to be more stable, I’m sighting for him, 1st is high. My friend adjusts sights to shoot lower. 2nd shot is even higher. I says are you sure you’re adjusted sight in right direction? - me asking this question is somewhat ludicrous as my friend is an accomplished gun smith. He adjusts sights while watching movement of sight Yep right way. Before firing 3rd shot we decide that something is really amiss. I look over at the roof of the car and see two two big divots. Long story short the drive home was quiet. We can laugh at it now though.
    Happy New Year

Poke a dowel through the hole and place a green high-powered laser on it and you will see where the bullet came from.

Bill, you're taking things privately. I'm not sure how well you know your neighbors but without a doubt they need to be informed. It may have not have even been them, perhaps a random example of the ignorance of certain individuals these days.

If I was that neighbor I would pay a visit to you...but I'm an ethical man.

Will they lie...maybe...it is incredibly careless as many have mentioned. Some would take that route but you may sense it.

That visit may save a life. Sad...all the best in this New Year...

You should take that flower pot to the local taxidermist have it mounted, be a good conversation piece.
