how do you get photos taken in "portrait" rather than landscape mode to post right?

    Hey @49ratfink
If you have taken that particular photo with a smart phone, there is a mode on the phone to edit.
Hit that and hit the crop mode, and then go to the little square that has an arrow on it, and then you can rotate the image to be corrected.
@jnaki is far more tuned into this and is an excellent H.A.M.B. member, that can advise you better than I can.
I have always enjoyed your photography.
    Thanks from Dennis.

most of these photos were taken with my Digital SLR camera. I started using my phone about 2 years ago.

I still don't know how you did that. my pics are all posted correct on my computer, ebay has a habit of not posting them correct as well, but you can just flip them on ebay.

    Hey @49ratfink
I know the feeling very well, I had to get rid of my old HP computer, windows 7 last year, it was a 15 year old unit.
And I now have an all new unit, Dell, (EXPERION) updated to the latest version of windows, and some other new elements added in. Money well spent indeed!
You are very welcome from Dennis.

    Hello,

Thanks for thinking of my knowledge with photos. I just happen to have phased into digital cameras and on those times when an old hot rod pops up and no digital camera is handy, or nearby, I have to use my phone. It is a 5 year old Android phone with the largest screen known to the phone world. It works fine and no problem in any phase for a telephone.
    upload_2025-1-8_1-53-20.png
The photos come out very clear and it still is up to the eye of the photographer to see the subject and work with what you have. Yes, portrait mode is the standard up/down phone holding position. But it is a two position with the button on the bottom. For me, it is always a secondary back up photo camera. Its primary use is a telephone… remember those? The end result of phone camera photo is where to put them. Do not try to work with the dinky camera controls/screen in editing. (Usually the pencil logo.) The screen is too small and accuracy is almost nil.

For those that do not use your laptop or home desktop for editing anything is asking for frustration and more problems than ants in a kitchen. First of all, the larger screen 14-17 inch laptop is perfect for all forms of computer usage. From writing letters, emails, composing business facts for job qualifications, etc. The uses are endless. Plus, if a question is brought up, access to the vast information is provided by the always plentiful, Google search engine. A larger home computer screen is also available if one’s eyesight is in need of “extra” help.

I used to have a 16 inch laptop years ago. I also had a 30 inch monitor for the powerful home computer that could power an elephant. The screen took up a lot of desk space. Each item was large enough to see from across the room. Ha! But, that had its two year run and moving to a high end 17 inch laptop allowed me to roam our small house and yard to do some computer jobs. The desktop was taken apart and now our granddaughter used the 30 TV monitor for a first time dorm room TV.

So, for those with phone cameras. Get all of your photos taken either landscape or portrait on to your laptop files. Once there, now you can use the laptop’s built in photo app or program to create what you want with ease. It is a no frustration situation. I taught our old grandfather (wife’s dad) how to use the computer program for his photos.

If you have to, take all the photos with your phone. I recommend a digital hand held camera for better quality photos, but in this day and age, I get stares the moment I take out the small digital camera that will make mincemeat out of phone cameras for quality and clarity. Yes, phone cameras are handy and they do give good photos.

But, you will be limited to taking action shots as one has to call up the photo app, then select landscape of portrait, then video or photo, single or multiple, and finally find the large button with your other hand for clear photo shots. No, my camera is not one of those larger 35mm size camera. It neatly fits into my hand/pockets for carrying around and protection.

In that time, I can point shoot and go to the next photo in an instant with one hand. While the phone user is still hunting for the right program on the screen. Don’t mistake the masses pointing their phone cameras at anything that moves in public. That is not considered quality photographs. It is like the old Kodak point and shoot cameras. No fuss, no bother, poor photos as a result.

    Jnaki

So, don’t worry about which way you have taken those phone camera photos. Load them all onto your laptop photo file. Now, you have a 14-17 inch workspace with more power for adjustments.

For all photos from any source, digital camera or phone: once you save your photos to your file, if you want to have a photo posted at the angle you want. The Word Document process is the easiest procedure. It allows any photo to be pasted and adjusted any direction and size. Even with this tool.

upload_2025-1-8_1-54-47.png upload_2025-1-8_1-55-8.png When you copy the photo from your laptop file and paste to a Word Document, it posts with dots on all 4 corners and a circle at the top. This is an adjusting tool. That circle allows you to move the angle of the photo anywhere.
    upload_2025-1-8_1-57-25.png
If the object is at an angle in your photo and it needs to be level, this tool is used to easily move the photo around to get the item level. Click on the photo and use the circle in motion to move it around.

    Note:

Your computer’s photo program is the one that has almost unlimited access to movement and photo altering as far as highlights, contrast, etc. Each computer program is different and you will just have to mess around with a photo as to size, angle, color clarity, etc. At least those programs allow you to have some control over changes to the original. Sometimes it is for the better and other times it helps to have a good digital camera and a steady stance. But, good composition is mandatory for a good photo, always.

I like to do simple stuff, like load the photo onto a Word Document directly from my own files. They are usually large and are portrait photos. Some are landscape, but if one holds the digital camera like we have all been taught from those early days, the photos come out large enough to make a landscape photo out of a portrait. So, the definition is lost to the world.
    upload_2025-1-8_2-2-36.png landscape mode

upload_2025-1-8_2-3-12.png portrait photo from a landscape photo. Cropped out all unnecessary items.

All of this camera quality photo, regardless of what was used can be adjusted on the simple Word Document. While the original stays in your photo file as large as it was and unaltered. But, if you “save as” to your photo file, the new size may replace your original photo size.

So, know how you are saving. If anything, put a letter “a” at the end of the file name saved. “50 Ford Sedan surfer” as the original save. A new cropped photo could be saved as: “50 Ford Sedan surfer A” so, both the original and modified photo are both saved. YRMV

“The photo is as good as the eye of the beholder…” The photo program just helps get them usable, but, composition is the key...

If you have any more questions, feel free to post and ask.

    Hey @49ratfink and @jnaki
I guess I should have said the same thing that jnaki said.
Indeed, always download your photos to the computer to do any editing, trying to do it with a cell phone, is an exercise in potential futility.

As jnaki stated, the smartphone is a telephone, and a camera/video unit, only as a secondary unit, as needed.

Anyway, you are now up to speed on how the photographic, "H.A.M.B. Universe" functions, per @lothiandon1940 and @jnaki.

I use a desk top computer, and have a 32" monitor. I also have "vintage" photo editing software I bought when I bought my Canon Digital Rebel in 1996 or so that does not work with anything beyond windows 7.... "Microsoft Digital Image Pro". my 6 year old $350.00 Samsung phone takes much better photos than my $800.00 Rebel with a $500.00 lens. I have 24,000 files in 141 folders in my "Car Show" folder.

I put a photo in Word and could not get it to do anything other than change the size.

"Portrait" pictures are all sideways on the phone, I load them on the computer and correct them in my photo software and they are correct on my computer, when I load them here they come out sideways. I can turn them sideways in the other direction on the computer and they come out right when I post them here.

I have a similar issue posting photos on ebay where random pictures load up sideways. my ebay pics are 95% taken landscape. I can change the orientation on ebay but not here.

a modern digital camera is on my list. phones suck because you can't really see what you are taking pictures of when the sun is out.

    Hello,

Your equipment seems good. Here is one last try at doing a landscape photo and make it landscape when posting anywhere.

Pull up a Paint Program from your computer files. Paste the photo on your Word Document and size it to what you like or need. Now, copy it and paste it on a "Paint Program." Once that is done, you can alter the pasted photo if needed.

Now, copy and paste to your Word Document and "save as." Save as is a safety feature to keep a modified photo as a new version and now can be pasted on any document or for our posts on the HAMB. Once placed on the HAMB and it is too large, delete and resize it on the Paint Program/Word Document, again. Yes, it seems like a lot of work, but cut and paste is simple and takes a few seconds.

    Jnaki

So, far, as many photos as I have cut and pasted, sometimes it takes a different approach to getting it to be the right direction. We are not computer programmers and know how it is set up. But, we are able to go around various roadblocks to get what we want and need.

By the way, isn't "I have 24,000 files in 141 folders in my "Car Show" folder...." a lot of files to fill up your base home computer hard drive limit? Or are they on an 5tb external hard drive? If I had that many photo files on my meager 1tb computer hard drive it would fill up that drive and make my laptop stop working... that is a lot of photo files and separate folders.

    Note:
I have always been told my my computer savvy son, to keep my current running hard drive about 1/2 full for best results in running excellence. As it gets beyond that, I copy and paste the offending folder to an external hard drive, for safe keeping. Safe keeping for what? Who knows when I would call up a 1956-60 drag racing photo for a story or two... YRMV

I have an external hard drive with all my pictures. it's about 5% full and I have way more than just my car pics on it.

I can't do anything with a photo in Word. paint did not change it. I figure if I cannot change it so it comes out right on my photo software it just isn't going to happen.
thanks for all your help, but I think it has something to do with my windows 7 as well as my photo software that is not compatible with modern operating systems.

    Hello,

Windows 7? Wow, that goes down in history... The company is now telling those folks with Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11. So, Windows 7 is way beyond help from the company services. Back then, it worked fine, but there are things the latest Windows 11 does that wasn't around in the Windows 7 days.

No, I do not used "AI" but, the computer in itself is an AI that we all have worked with for years. My wife's home computer is still a Windows 10 and we will keep at it until it starts to falter. Then, we will switch to a more powerful chip and programming that Windows 11 offers in another desktop or laptop.

Send me a car photo and let me see if it works on the Windows 11 I have on my own laptop, + Word + Paint. You have some nice photos and it is a shame that the old computer program may be the cause.

    Jnaki

This is like a mystery that needs more searching. But, save your cash for another laptop or desktop, (not a camera) with the latest Windows 11 set up for faster uploads, searches and downloads. i noticed the change to the windows 11 and the new chip to level 7. Now, the next laptop will be a intel level 9 chip and more power for faster service and computing aspects. 1TB Internal hard drive is fine, but I do try to keep it under 50 % full. YRMV

When I went from my powerful desktop computer to a more powerful laptop programming files, it was so much faster and did things that allowed me to fine point my researching. writing skills, word and paint all were upgraded to the latest versions and it makes computing more fun. with the powerful components, i have not had any problems using any part of my laptop. other than a bunch of "rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" on the screen when I fall asleep during a researching and typing some facts for a story. ha! It has nothing to do with the computer parts, that is for sure.

    Hello,

Thanks for the photos. I downloaded them to my photo files. Once there, I opened them up on the photo program built in to the Microsoft portion of my laptop. Now, I looked at the posted photo vertically and copied them to the Word Document to type up this post. Simple and easy. Now, it posted as way too large and so I took the outside “photo dots” and made the photo smaller for posting on the thread. I practiced by placing the smaller photo on the thread box.

    Number 1
    upload_2025-1-13_3-10-45.png
Now, it was a manageable size without going too large and blurry on the pasting.

Download, copy, save to file, paste to Word Doc, adjust to viewing size, copy from doc to paste on HAMB thread.

    Number 2:
    upload_2025-1-13_3-13-7.png
It was the same procedure for the second photo. The smaller size was easier to work with, so, it pasted just fine. No rotation necessary. The vertical one looked better.

Since you are still working or trying to work with a Windows 7 programming, perhaps you are right, you do need a new computer. Make sure it has the latest intel 9 chip. The rest of the latest computers are personal choice from various manufacturers. Warranty was not necessary for three years of daily work.

But, my Alienware 17 inch laptop is powerful enough to run just about any software programming. Also, it allows multiple windows to be open for various sources. Most new laptops come with a great built in photo program that allows good editing and file storage. 1tb is good for a built in storage.

It is now 5 years old and still working well.

As far as a digital camera. I have a 15 year old Panasonic/Lumix/Leica lens pocket camera with 12x /48x zoom that is good length for any photo shots. It still produces great quality photos that need to be resized to fit most web sites. The clarity is still amazing and is the mainstay of our photo shooting, these days.
    upload_2025-1-13_3-14-6.png
The small format camera fits nicely for one hand photos or videos. It surpassed my wife’s Iphone for handy access to fast photos when necessary, not waiting for the camera tab to open up and then arranging the phone to shoot a photo and not a video, etc. a simple, automatic focusing digital camera. I would recommend storing them on an external hard drive in case your phone is lost or does.

    Hello,
The Iphone has one good result for photos. Everything gets sent to the Icloud for storage. Which is good and bad. Good, if one forgets to upload photos to laptop's hard drive or loses the photos via an computer accident. Bad, every thing you take with the Iphone camera gets sent to the Icloud. Then when the free service gets filled up, the pricing comes into play.
    Good: it is low cost...

    Bad: iCloud+ plans and pricing

The photos are stored in the Apple Cloud and are safe from deletion. But, good luck in retrieving your photos as you want to see them or have them moved to an external hard drive. Yes, they are on your phone and can see them anytime. Except when they get corrupted for any reason. Back up is great, but into an external hard drive like a low cost 5tb drive that fits into a pocket with an usb cord. And, you have direct access to it for all family needs saved in digital form...

In case of house fire or evacuation, grab the external hard drive and since everything of value is stored on it, that is all you need. The rest of household goods is replaceable. (updated every month or earlier if needed) YRMV
