I have been asked to post some pictures and info on how I installed a 428 CJ into my '40 coupe that I bought in 1965 and finally got on the road in 2022. I probably didn't take as many pictures as I should have, but hope what I share will be helpful. Let me know if there are any questions. There have been a couple changes made shortly after a few miles that the pictures don't show. First was changing to larger AFCO 2 3/4" front calipers, and switching to QA-1 front coil overs and Heidts lower control arms. . The first 3 are very early construction, but show the Chassis Engineering Inc. block mounts, C.E. crossmember and their Ford style biscuits. The next two may better show the block brackets and....cross member,.....which will be removed and replaced with a new one installed 180*, and next to the front cross member. I had to reposition the engine slightly for better drive line angle and a switch to a TKO 5-speed instead of the '64 top loader. This cost me using the fender well headers I spent soooo much time building. They were Jet-Hot coated which ruled out any modifications, so they became "garage art" until they eventually sold. The following show the new cross member installed with alternator and remote oil filter. I had room for a short filter before moving the engine.. Next are shots taken during final assembly. The oil pan used is a '60s rear sump Ford truck C6TZ-6675-B. Pickup is C6TZ-6622-A. Special main bolt to support the pickup I used is ARP HARJ3.500-1 155-5201 I was able to "squeeze" in a 17" steel 6-blade Derale fan (instead of an electric) along with a Walker '40 Ford shroud, behind the copper/brass 3 1/2" Custom Auto Radiator. Headers are Sanderson FF 427 for '53-up F-100. Thank you for the interest. Bob
Thanks Bob. I appreciate the effort. What headers did you use? Sanderson? What was the body style they were intended for?
They are Sanderson FF 427, for '53-up F-100. I bought them plain in case I had to do any modifications, then had them ceramic coated locally in Niles MI.
My X-neighbor was installing a 454 Shivel-lay in his 39 Ford when I first moved into the neighborhood. It was an impressive sight setting between the fenders without the radiator installed yet...... I like this MUCHO BETTER-O !! You selling tickets for rides ?! Guaranteed 'smoke-machine' fer sure ! Nice.......... 6sally6
Beautiful build! That answers my question can one of these handle a FE Ford Behemoth. I was thinking about adding one of these to a 39 we have thanks for the pics.
Not bad. I'm running the stock 735 CJ Holley jetted one number up and 3:89 gears, so 5th in the TKO and 65-70 mph has the engine tacking +/- 2000, resulting in 16-17 mpg on the road, and 8-10 around town. I'm still messing with vacuum advance timing and hope to improve the mileage a tad, but it's still better than I thought it would be with the more aggressive roller cam.
That's not bad.....I was thinking of trying the Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 FI on mine..... I am still in the pipe dream phase.
