For the record, ALL 1955-63 small block Chevrolet V8s had a forged crankshaft. 1964-67 passenger car 283s got cast cranks, and the truck 283s still got the forged cranks. The larger counterweights on the cast cranks necessitated additional clearance in the lower end of the block, and so that means that you can put a small journal 327 crankshaft (which were all forged) in a '64-'67 283 block with no clearance issues.

It's going into the Whatever project this weekend. 1st bolt on the new flywheel, billet steel SFI rated, why? Just because!

Then start working on the exhaust system. I think I'll start on the drivers side of the engine. More stuff in the way, so if I can fit in a tri-Y system on that side, I can do it for the passenger side. We'll see...

Old thread I know, but I think it's relevant info...

What is the fillet radius on the forged 283 cranks? The modern aftermarket ones have a 1/8" radius I believe, are the old factory forged 283 cranks the same?

I don’t they were that large a radius, but I don’t have one currently outside of a block to measure. c’mon Chevy guys, measure twice, report here once

I have personal experience of a '57 Belair 2dr hardtop with 283 power pac engine, 3 speed manual trans, 3.70 posi rear, dual exhaust and a cast crankshaft. My dad bought the car for my sisters to drive in high school; I think in '64 it was purchased from the original owner.
I got a call from my sister at a local garage that the car was broke and the mechanic said it had a broken crank. I got the car home and pulled the engine . The crank was broke just in front of the rear main. I replaced the crank with a new forged one from the Chevy dealer. There was no clue that that engine was ever taken apart before this incident.
