Any of you guys ever adapted a clutch cable on your street rods? Thinking about trying a cable set up on my 40 Ford with SBC and looking for ideas. Thanks

He adapted a cable to his clutch from Ford V8 pedals in Miss Vickie. I may try the same with B4Cdan....

There's a magnifying glass tab / pennant towards the top of the page, below the horizontal red ribbon.

  6. I use the Fox body Mustang cable. The oem version has a better liner than most aftermarket units. I do believe a Morse 43 series would be plenty for a pull application also.

Why do you feel a cable would be better ?

I put a clutch cable on a '34 Ford P/U, 351 Cleavland, 5 speed, headers, etc. only because of lack of room. After 4 years not a single problem. No stretching even though we put adjustable ends on both ends, just in case. You can't have enough ways to adjust "things"!

I did several customer chassis with a cable clutch. Got my cables from Roy Brizio Street Rods.

I have a monza V8 bell housing that has the cable mount cast into it. Clutch arm is at a downward angle , but have kept it all these years because I figured I would eventually try to put a SBC in a place where there is no room.i think it would be a super clean set up for someone.

Factory Ford Mustang cable(82-04) is a great cable, 78-81 used a different cable.

Bottom cable is the Ford unit.
Its a low friction low effort longlasting cable, some aftermarket cables I wouldn't use on a parking brake.

I haven't personally adapted a clutch cable on a street rod, but I've seen a few builds where people have successfully done it, especially with limited space in the engine bay. A cable setup can be a good alternative to a hydraulic system, offering easier installation and maintenance in some cases. On your '40 Ford with an SBC, routing and heat management will be key factors to consider to ensure smooth operation and longevity. It’s always a good idea to check with others who have done similar swaps to see what brand or type of cable worked best for them. While you're working on the drivetrain, it's also worth looking into the marine hydraulic steering system options if you're aiming for a more modern driving feel. Good luck with your project!

Just use 39 ford peddles in your 40 , it makes clutch linkage simple !!!

  21. Yes, but mechanical has a tendency to bind when your playing hard and the cable can be routed where linkage won't work.

I have had the cable in the Ranch Wagon for 13 years with no problems. HRP

Unless your incantation of mechanical linkage is hopelessly underbuilt or you're experiencing faulty equipment , you're not going to incur " bending " linkage , I've worked on 5ton trucks , farm equipment down to vw beetles & garden equipment , single disc to multi disc , for 70 + years & have never seen a stock mechanical linkage bend unless it was compromised by misuse or alterations ..

HRP your link above gives an error. I wanted to see what you used as I am planning on a t5 in my roadster and may want to go cable when I do the changeover.

  24. There is different ways to skin a cat and operate a manual clutch, like my 5 speed transmission there is no external levers for linkage and no clear path if there were, I am not going to arguing the merits of a cable over linkage but there is a reason why Ford Motor Company decided to use a cable instead of linkage on the later Mustangs.

I never said the linkage would bend, the word I used is BIND, It can hang up the gears under hard shifting, Lord knows I have done that in the past, stacking the gears in my 4 speed Falcon.

Again, there are times when the cable will work best, I am sure there are times where the hydraulic clutch or mechanical linkage is the right way to accomplish the job with different transmissions and ways of routing linkage. HRP

  25. Sorry about that my friend, it is a good like but it's posted in the 52-54 Ford Social group.
I'll see if I can gather it up and add it to the thread, it may take a while. HRP

    Sorry , my 1 1/2 eyes read bend ...

  27. Using DRuss setup as a model. Here is my cable setup with two '40 Ford brake pedals on my Model A with SBC and S-10 T5 on a TCI Chassis. Car doesn't run yet
Used a modified Mustang cable sold by Brizio's same as DRuss did.
