upload_2025-1-27_4-17-20.png The silver blue Corvair color was popular, but my wife did not go to the local So Cal dealer to buy her first car, which happen to be a 62 Corvair. A close by neighbor had one for sale in Buena Park and it was low cost at the time.

    Hello,

When these photos and action sequences were going on, my wife had just bought her first car, a 62 silver blue Corvair. She was a senior in high school and had a job as a long distance operator for the telephone company in Anaheim. So, this Corvair took her to school and to her odd hours job. She worked a modified swing shift from 4-11pm. But, the schedule was that she could leave around 10 normally as the long distance phone call assistance needs dropped off dramatically.

She did not have to worry about grades as she was a top student with all A’s and plenty of time to get her school work done on time. But, it was the freedom that the 62 Corvair gave her, similar to all of us teenagers with their first purchased cars.

1963 Santa Barbara sports car races(photos) and a little Corvair history was going on right down the street in Anaheim at Bill Thomas Race Cars.

upload_2025-1-27_4-21-4.png We knew who to go to for parts and more power...

In the next several years, it took her to the local 4 year college with ease. Parking was not a problem as the small stature Corvair took up less space designated for a full size 1950s-60s car. Despite the current trend of a vast college campus parking lot(s) with a mini bus pick up for the students to get to the upper campus, she started her long walk trek uphill to the campus. We all did the “hill climb” walk in rain or shine. Yes, it sounds like an old folks story about walking for miles through snow to get to school…yikes!

But, for the 20 somethings, it was a good activity that kept most folks in good shape. By the time I got to the local college campus, I too had to park in the lower campus lot with the 65 El Camino. Luckily, it was one row back from the row “my future wife” parked almost like clockwork. Later on, when we were in a class together and then we met accidentally in person, on a campus coffee break, it was fate.

Her 1962 Corvair was stock and ran fine, until it didn’t, several times. By this time, we were married and lived in a dinky apartment. That Corvair need some extra suspension and power. We knew where to go in Anaheim to get such parts and help, Bill Thomas Race Cars. But, as young 20 somethings lives were headed, the extra money, if there was any, was for daily living and supplies.

Each time, I drove it in the majority of rain in So Cal. Luckily, it did not conk out, but when it did, we fixed it, then finally gave it away to an uncle who was in need of an old car. The cars of her choice were now, the 1965 red El Camino and the 327 SBC powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery.

But, Corvairs are well known for having the shiniest rear bumpers of all factory cars… Besides those fancy race cars that had no bumpers, the stock bumpers on most Corvairs were usually black with oil and grime. But, underneath, it was perfect chrome, all nice and shiny.

Similar in looks and color... and, I knew where it was parked on the vast college campus lower parking lot. One would think the lot would have been packed with compact cars, but the Corvair had its small cadre of supporters and most read the articles and stayed away. YRMV

My wife was not an automobile fanatic as we were growing up. A car was a car. It got her from one place to another. The kids were usually, crammed into the back seat of a Chevy sedan in the OKC area or the multiple cross country road trips to So Cal when they were little kids.

When we met each other in college, she got to know me and my tastes in old cars, sporty cars and trucks. As our get together forays on the weekends and sometimes during the vacations, we would drive to a coastal location to spend time looking at sporty cars and some cool fast sedans, mostly factory foreign builds. This allowed us to spend time at the beach, but also, have a future plan of one day buying a nice car. She was driving a 62 Corvair at the time.

In the years after graduation, we got married and moved to a small apartment we could afford. But, our interest in one day getting a nice car was in the future, but still a long ways away. We met one of our neighbors who had an interest in fine cars and always had a two door sports car convertible or a hardtop coupe.

It's not that I ever disliked Corvairs but I really like them with this accessory.
