Customs Finally starting on the wife’s 56

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Jan 5, 2019.

  1. Added a battery and some weight to compensate for the radiator.

probably leave it here for now. Would only cut another 1/2 round if I did. I can handle that on the finished in. Seats are out plus it will get AC.

might raise up or cut the pinion bump down.
Looks like the DS has room to operate.

  2. Wrong year skirt but good for a reference
Crap, I’d almost fab a rear upper edge to make em work.

will need to trim rear axle bumps tops. Possible add a small c-notch.
Frames get narrow here. Not opposed to fabricating some floor bumps to clear a notch.

Anthony, a few thoughts on your front coils. In my experience, typically you will lose 2" per coil cut. It's not exact, but usually ballpark. Also, even after bouncing in the shop, it will settle more in the first few miles on the road.

Moog has their springs listed online by dimension and application. While you don't know what you have, you can look up stock application and find similar ones by diameter, wire size and rate.

  6. Will probably purchase new springs, progressive rate preferably.
Just trying to get close before I yank the frame out from under it.
Considering a frame mount rear upper shock mount and possibly air shocks to keep it from bottoming out when loaded or adding helper air springs. Air Lift
    Not bagged to slam it.

  7. Got the steering hooked up and with the engine moved up the center link still hits the pan.

I’ll either modify this one of get one that clears.
A tri 5 pan would clear the center link but is so taller. I’ll take some measurements.

  8. Rolled it outside. wife said the back was too low last night. Raised it up an inch.

Now she says it might need to drop a little :)
If the weather is nice we might clean off all the shop dust. Give it a ho bath. Clean off the roof.

You're close enough for now on altitude, so you can make the final adjustments when you get to final assembly!

  10. That’s the plan. Gonna finish up the steering column mount and take a few pics and measurements

get the chassis out and blasted
Probably will add a rear shock mount to the frame and added caster upper shafts.
Figure out what holes I need to get rid of on the firewall.

  11. Wife ordered a set of these today
    IMG_4606.jpeg
15x7s. Close out sale less than $100 per
So looks like she’s chosen thin beauty rings, spider rings and push thru caps with chrome acorn lugs.
    Wheels painted matching blue.
Looking at 195-205/70 maybe 65 narrow whitewalls.

located some early 80s ones but once I showed her the difference, the understood why I dig these and the hort rod style OEs without the slotted holes.

  12. About 15 minutes. Diluted CLR with a mild cleaning pad. Rinced and dried. Mild compound on a small orbital

I'm working on a 56-gasser project and moved the rear axle back 2" to make room for 29.5-inch-tall slicks, INMHO seems like 56-57 Chevrolets have the rear tires to far forward from the factory o_O

  16. Probably would on a gasser.
On a lowered ride, it looks well placed IMG_4612.jpeg
    Stock height kinda looks off.
But I haven’t ruled out looking at it an inch back
But I’m not moving a gas tank. Gets tight in a lowered wagon

I went this route for clearance. Cut and move then add filler. Had to use my 57 as a example. IMG_3768.jpeg

Picture was taken with rear end moved 1" to the rear, was going to cut the opening at the white line but installed longer heim joints on ladder bars to move it another 1" to allow for tire growth

  22. Moving the axle back 2 inches to fit a 3 inch taller tire basically keeps the tire in the same place in relation to the front of the wheel olpening.
Doing that on a stock size 3 inch smaller tire will probably look goofy

It’ll screw up weight transfer as well. But your wagon doesn’t need to rely on traction off the line as well.

  27. Weight transfer on mine is handled by keeping the crap in the cargo area tied down

  28. The thin outside ring
    IMG_4615.jpeg
    those still a available?
Been searching. Found 1.5 wide beauty rings but nothing like these.

I've never seen an outside ring like that, don't know where to get them.
