I load tested it yesterday... dropped to just under 6v... where the 6 v dropped to just under 5...my plan is to try to get it to charge to over 8... but my real plan is to do a 12v conversion...but a this point all the battery does is start the motor.. and run the 6v fuel pump..... so not a real concern... learning about 8v battery's is interesting... but most likely info I'll probley never use again...

If your 8v. charger didn't bring it up over 8v. it might mean your battery has failed and maybe wont ever take a charge. If your battery warranty isn't good, it might be time to decide if you want to convert it to 12v. or buy another 8v. battery and go the route of making it charge? Or maybe just buy a 6v. battery and be done?

Look at the bright side. You now know that you can charge a 6 volt battery with a 6 volt charger, a 12 volt charger, or with a brand new 8 volt charger......:D

Surprised you didn't fry the battery with a higher voltage charger, or at least mess up the chargers.

It's not that hard to see :
    3 caps = 6 Volt
    4 caps = 8 Volt

I use a 12 volt charger with a 6 volt (1154) lamp in series with the circuit. Wire the two filaments in parallel, and the lamp will pass two or three amps of current, and eventually bring the battery up to it's rated voltage. Trickle only, since the 1154 light is a current limiter.

  11. He gave you the answer on how to charge that 8V battery that's in your vehicle. You don't. You fix the issues that predicated the 8V band-aid. If you can't afford a battery, which is a maintenance item regardless of its voltage, you're probably in the wrong hobby. That $50 8V charger was 1/3 of the way to buying a new battery.

As you've also found out, if your vehicle's charging system hasn't been changed to output >8V, all you're going to do is discharge that 8V battery back down to a 6V charge.

Nobody here is driving their hot rod in a temperature as you describe. Especially the OP, who is in Las Vegas.

An 8V battery on a 6V system is a band aid. Switching to 12V allowed the OEMs to run higher wattage loads with less current, which means lighter gauge wiring and switches.

Here we go, "oem switched to 12v to use lighter wire and switches". Yea right. Explain why economy car manufacturer Volkswagen waited until 1967 to so called "save money" and finally switched to 12v. Explain why Chevrolet waited till 1955 to switch to 12v when corporate sister Olds went 12v in 1953. Could it have anything to do with Chevy getting an overhead v8 in 1955? Nah, it's just coincidence. Geez, the internet, where self proclaimed geniuses are born every millisecond

sure there is, the plywood floor has about a 4 x 6 hole that you can barely hook up the cables and you can only see 2 caps..... that what I went out to check to make sure.... thats when I seen only 3 caps, and went to get a flash light... then I clearly read 6 volts.... so in my life I have still never seen an eight volt battery... but sure they exist

sorry-was thinking you had some 'shops ' and 'boys' around vegas area--mistook what you were meaning!....

  19. Ford had a V8 in 1932. Why did they wait for 20+ years?

Cars kept adding electrical equipment. Radios. Lights. Wipers. Gauges. What's required to run all that stuff? Power. What's the formula for power? Voltage * Current. What drives wire and terminal contact sizes? Current. How do you reduce the current in order to keep those sizes down? By increasing voltage.

My day job is as an electrical engineer who designs electrical systems and wiring harness for industrial equipment with far greater electrical demands than any vintage vehicle. What sort of electrical engineering do you do?

An 8V battery in a system that was adequately designed for 6V is a BAND AID. Especially so if the damn charging system isn't changed accordingly.

  20. I read the thread. You didn't post the text quoted below? That certainly makes it seem like you have a car with an 8V battery.

this was a pretty simple thread

first post; how do you charge an 8 volt battery...

second post; with an 8v charger...

thread done.... how it got to VW wiring was what called evolution...

most of the rest has been clever ways to come at "ALLDONE" TO TRY TO GET UNDER HIS SKIN AND GET A ROAR FROM THE OTHER DING DONGS THAT THINK IT'S COOL... going from me admitting I miss read, to me not being able to do anything. not knowing anything, and not knowing how to run a 40yr in business shop is pare for this site and why every body I talk to in vegas says the same thing... I read the stuff there but never post...the trolls attack everybody not in their circle...you guys don't bother me , lots of good help and advise,... thats the honey of this place... lots of angry BEE'S thou.....
