Fuel pump was failing far from home!!! MacGyver the system. Cut fuel hard line bypassed fuel pump ran rubber fuel line to fuel rail from cal tank it got me home only if I kept it under 2000rpm. To keep from stalling. What I need to know is what 12v inline low pressure pump are best. Running a flatty/tri power. 1.5/2.5 psi ! Let me know Thanks
Hi Mark, I found some information on HAMB (or FORDBARN) years ago about FACET brand electronic fuel pumps ..... they're available at Aircraft Spruce and probably other suppliers too. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/40163.php Apparently these pumps can be spliced into your existing line from the tank to the mechanical pump because they have a flow through capacity when switched OFF ..... please double check this ability, I'm relying on my memory. I was going to use a three position toggle switch with OFF in the middle, spring loaded ON one side and switched permanently ON the other side. If everything is operating correctly the pump can be left OFF, if you need to prime the float bowls or clear a vapor lock use the spring loaded ON and if the mechanical pump fails switch ON permanently. Probably should include a 12V supply cancellation safety circuit to the permanently ON operation ...... just in case. Good luck, I trust this info helps.
Amazon has 3 different ones listed. All 3 have 5/16 line fittings. One is 2.5-4 psi and 30 gph at $10.oo. 4.5 - 7 psi 80 Leeters pr hr. another one 3 to 6 psi. $12.oo All 3 100 duty cycle.
Do you have a link for that $25 Facet pump from NAPA? My google search showed $86.99. In the distant past, I've had good luck with Facet electric fuel pumps. Lots of miles in a 3/4 ton IH pickup. Very recently, I had a run of failed Edelbrock electric fuel pumps (I run dual electric pumps, with check valves, so I always have a backup pump at the flip of a toggle switch). The pumps will burn out if run dry. I had a priming problem in the 1962 Volvo, one pump failed and the other had poor fuel pressure. My diesel truck (Cummins 4 cylinder in a 1986 Ford F150) had lots of miles on 2 Edelbrock green (diesel) pumps. Loaned the truck to my granddaughter's husband. He ran the tank dry. Cost him two tows - The local police had it towed - And then it had to be towed to me so I could replace the pumps. This summer, I intent to rebuild both fuel systems with genuine Faucet pumps. There are look-a-like pumps for sale on the internet - I am not sure that they are reliable. Russ
Keep in mind the location of the pump, you want it as close to the tank as possible. https://facet-purolator.com/specifications/
One of the things I hate about the net search, you can never get back to where you were. When I did that last night, I had no reason to stick it in my Favorites. Sorry, it probably jumped into the n.a.p.a. search list being I wasn't being n.a.p.a. specific.
What browser are you using? In Firefox there should be a "History" button to click on in the menu bar at the top of the browser window. It may not be visible if the menu bar has been closed to make more space on your screen. I also find myself using the Brave browser more frequently. If you click and hold on the "page back" button it opens a drop-down menu that gives you the option of using the "History" button to see a list of your previously viewed pages. It will probably sort your page visits by same day, previous day, previous week, and so on. Click on the link of your choice and you can time-travel back to revisit that web page.
If you're running dual electric pumps inline, is it possible that the powered pump is seeing a higher load from trying to move fuel through the unpowered pump? I could see the unpowered pump acting as a restriction to fuel flow and shortening the life of the powered pump.
The pumps are in parallel, no fuel flows through the un-powered pump. Some pictures, with labels, of the dual electric pumps in a diesel truck. These pictures are about 5 years old. Over the last few years, this truck was driven to Lead Ain't Dead (Dewey, OK) and a Winfield-Watson Reunion (Mojave, CA). I have confidence in this setup - ( Just don't run it out of fuel). From left to right: 5/16' hose labeled "<< TO TANK" Shutoff valve labeled "BALL VALVE" - Handy to have when maintenance is required. Tee (not labeled) splits the fuel into parallel fuel hoses 2 fuel filters, one labeled "FILTER" 2 Edelbrock electric fuel pumps (Green color indicates it is for diesel) Again, from left to right: 2 fuel filters, one labeled "FILTER" 2 Edelbrock electric fuel pumps 2 check valves, labeled "CHECK VALVES" Tee And a nylon fuel line going off the top of the picture to the diesel engine Russ
Here's a link to the 40163 installation sheet, it's at the bottom of the page. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pdf/40105instruct.pdf FACET recommends their specific filter on the primary side of the pump.
I use a mini Holley w/mallory regulator, has been perfect for 2yrs. it's low pressure but you still need a reg to get low enough, I run @ 2psi w/BIG97's 3.
Great, please let us know how it all goes. How did you splice it into your plumbing, are you still using the mechanical as the primary pump and the FACET as a back-up pump ...... maybe a photo if possible please.
I did a run today. Had the same problem but less like fuel starve feeling. If I dropped rpm to 2000 it clears and gos well. Seems at a 170/80 temp. Running 2 psi pressure. This pumps on frame rail next to crossmember & fuel gravity feeds pump and pushes to fuel reg and to fuel rail to feed progressive tri power 3 super 97s. The pump is different than most with sound not the usual hum it’s a louder ticking/ clicking sounds. I’m wondering if fuels boiling at carb base. Back to the drawing board. Next time I remove the heat wraps on system I’ll take some photos. Later
Yes, it's a Solid State pump so the clicking is typical. Are the 97's the Speedway brand ones or the genuine UK supplied ones. There's a lot of info on here about the two types, do a search. Have you checked for fuel flow/volume at the fuel rail point, if that's good check float levels and for any internal blockages/debris.
That’s my next attempt. Just odd she flys till warmed up. That’s the oddity of it. Thanks for the heads up.
That's acting like it's a little rich, what do your plugs look like. How long have you had this engine combination/car, has this activity just recently happened and everything was all fine beforehand. And I haven't even suggested the ignition as yet .....
Thanks for asking. Build the car built the motor and running gear last 18mths. All new. 250 miles or so ran. Plugs look great. Using a E-fire from Stromberg for ignition. Exhaust is clean. Just enough soot at tips. It’s did the flutter out I pulled over jumped out and zero fuel pressure on gage? So found a small rock and lightly tapped the top of Reg & 1psi popped up. Today is take apart Regulator look for blockage. That’s where I’m at. I’ll find this hick up ! Did throw the trimming light on it’s about 10degrees above top dead center. Runs well.later
That's good info .... thanks. It'll probably be something simple in the long run, good luck with it and please keep us posted.
