Great memories from an 86 yr old enthusiast! Just passed my full fendered chopped top roadster to my grandson after 50 yrs and am still hooked. The pics are great and keep them coming if possible! Hot RodMagnus

HAMB Gold (again) - thanks Jimmy!
This reminds me of spectator racing at the local dirt track, just bring out the family car!

hot rod 1953.jpg These photos probably came from the Petersen Archives. This looks like Bob Petersen, it was probably taken by Bob D'Olivo he was still using his red grease pencil when I worked there in the 1980s.
The frame had tinfoil and was propped up to reflect light into the shadows.

Absolutely excellent photos Jimmy! Thankyou for sharing them.
    PS. Dig that headlight-less chopped '36 3W.

  8. @29Sleeper clearer zoom, he seems familiar likely PETE, thank you for your insight. Something I have found was before Bob D'Olivo was hired photos from HOT ROD features were mailed to those featured whether it was an event, club, Timing Assoc. or feature car owner. This is why the Petersen archives are largely devoid of content prior to 1953.

Jimmy, there are lots of memories here! The film I sent you a year or so ago and you posted is the same era, but different tracks.
Harry Duncan's "Doodle Bug" (a sort of T coupe) had a big Ardun. It dropped its crank onto the ground right in front of our car at Santa Ana. He partnered with the Chrismans on several cars.
In the last group of images, the guy with his hands in his pockets, looking at the camera while next to the Barlow's Muffler dragster sure looks like me 70+ years ago, and the guy next to "me" with his back turned sure could be my older brother, Bob (R.I.P.)
Thanks for your continued efforts for all of our education and enjoyment!

  16. Thank you for posting these. So inspiring.
I dig the Hupmobile Skylark, must have been super rare even in 1953.

  17. Sorry missed the replies been feeling the effects of my cancer treatment, hoping that round I just finished is the last. Finally scanned the last 8x10 photos

G'day @Terry Buffum, sorry for the lengthy delay in replying. Glad these photos brought back so many memories, & thank you for sharing your memories of Duncan's "Doodle Bug". These were taken in April of 1953 at the 1st drag championships. I love history and sharing what I learn if it brings back memories or inspires new Rodders the effort is more than worth it.

    for those that haven't seen Terry's 8mm from 1954

No worries! To inspire is why I share glad you liked. Those Hupmobile's would be rare but L.A. would have had a few with the movie big wigs around.

I have a few more I need to save as Jpegs.

I had a friend who was a fireman at the station that oversaw the fairgrounds. His wife opened a horse jumping school in San Dimas. When they replaced the tower he took this one and set it up next to their jump ring. It lasted until the late 70s when they divided the land and sold it as lots.

I along with many others appreciated all the vintage postings. I'm sure it was a ton of work to do. Can't say thanks enough. JMO

  26. Always been happy to share my finds and appreciate the response I get when I do create threads and understand many appreciate even if they only like the posts.

Why I deleted... I deleted the photos because comments I read from Ryan on another thread about his distain for watermarks, that is his view & I respect that, but at same time I feel I can't continue posting watermarked images on his Forum.

I only started watermarking photos when people started passing off photos and negatives I possess as their own, they even started selling them on ebay (this was 10+ years ago). I collect for personal reasons and happy to share and will donate the collection someday (the collection now number in the thousands), to put in perspective I have spent enough money to build a '32 Ford roadster, 5w or even a 3w.

I will continue to contribute to the HAMB just not with vintage photos from my collection. I really hope this post doesn't get me banned :(:(

Thank you for the explanation. But I completely understand and it really sucks when some low life POS not only takes credit for your product but also profits from it at the same time. Glad you're still with us but I for one will miss your vintage photos.

Jimmy healing thoughts your way. I think you should reconsider sharing your images with the watermark. I don't think your collection fell into the same category as was it was being described. I can understand how you felt reading it but again it wasn't directed at you. You have a right to do what you are doing and have well explained why. Your watermark does not interfere with the images as many do and it is well known you pay for the history you are sharing. I am not alone in revering your many Threads and the history you have shared here. Please do what you have always done in your signature style.
